After buying my 1955 2nd edition I realized there was no oil filter. Is there
any reason why it might be this way. Truck runs fine without it. Should I
buy a new one and replace it?

According to the 1955-59 Chevrolet Truck Assembly Manual, RPO (that is Regular Production OPTION) 237 Oil Filter was available for both six and V8 engines. Different parts used for each type of engine, but looks to be a bolt-on in either case. If I remember correctly, the six cylinder filter was not a "full flow" system, that is all oil did not pass through it.
