    Yabbutt ; WHY ?

Unless you have a modern engine , you'll not notice much improvement .

Far more bang for your buck is delivered by installing an " Ignitor " points replacement device , from Pertronix .

I'm running an MSD6a, on a 12 volt system. I noticed an improved idle, but nothing else, as was expected. I agree with Nate on the question of why? A msd6al is way overkill for these trucks. I don't think you need the rev limiter, and there are some cheaper electronic ignitions out there. That being said, I am happy with my 6A, and chose to install it, but knew it was more than the truck needed. It will work fine, but unless you want the look of having it mounted on the firewall, I'd check out the cheaper alternatives.......Mike

    Thanks Mike

The following link from the Kelly`s truck program gives another impresion. What Even says is maybe "working bench sience" and not taken from truck drivers experience?I have contacted the V8 team for an answer on there results.
I apreasiate your intiativ checking out cheaper alternatives.

The link only showed a picture for me.
From my learnings through school, on the job etc., I would not expect to see a big gain by running an MSD on these old engines. They are lower compression, slow turning, poor intake, poor exhaust machines, not built for performance. There are upgrades, don't get me wrong. The MSD is designed to provide a potentially high voltage, multiple spark, at lower rpm's, then kicks to a single spark at higher revs. They work well, depending on the motors needs. On our old trucks, the multiple sparks may help a bit with idle quality, due to the poor efficiency. One definite advantage of using an MSD box, is that the points then act only as an on/off switch, carrying much less current, therefore lasting many thousands of miles. They also look very cool mounted on a firewall. That being said, many think the pertronix setup is a better way to go. I have no experience with it, but my understanding is that it mounts in the distributor, and replaces the point. Someone correct me if that's wrong. I have heard they work well, and they are fairly cheap. Hope that helps some, i'm sure someone will add more info.....Mike
