Nate kind sir could you tell where you found the citric acid powder for cleaning engine water passages ? not a secret is it ?
Citric Acid Powder Yuo have to check Baking and candy making supply stores , it took me a while to find one that stocked it so I went to a chemical supply place and bought 75 # of it , should last me a few years (I hope !)
thanx Nate . now time to clean the thing up. recently started to heat up, have new hoses, water pump and tuned . havent checked thermostat but thought i would flush it all clean first.
A Good Plan ! Just remember to buy a bottle of " shout ! " or other sudsless detergent as the Citric Acid cannot work until all the oily grease residue is gone . WARNING ! WARNING ! DO NOT decide ' oh screw it ' and try to use washing detergent ! I did that and it took me over a week of daily driving with three or more flushings per day before I got all that darned soapy suds out .
If you're going to spend the money for all of that, why wouldn't you just buy a new 'stat in lieu of testing the existing one. Real cheap at Napa!
Would brick cleaning acid work? It eats rust off steel overnight. I have seen Eletrasol used on power plants on drilling rigs. They said it dont make suds. Detergent with HE on it dont foam much. The front loader washing machines cant handle foam. I need to do mine as it gets hot during summer when we go slow
T-stats & Cleaners New 'stats are often very poorly made these days sad to say . Running without one is very bad as it overheats the engine without showing on the gauge.... I'd be leery of brick cleaning acid , it's prolly Phosphoric Acid , read the label ! Be aware the nether regions of the water jacket can have 2" of fine rusty silt in them all dried up and ready to dissolve and dump back into the colant on a hot day's running , this -after- you've cleaned it well and run clean coolant a few weeks . I used to knock out the freeze plugs and use a long bit of welding rod or old coat hanger to scrape in and around behind the cylinders where you cannot see..... I bet when you remove the bock's drain plug nothing comes out the the hole will *so* tightly plugged you'll think it was never drilled through when new .
