An engine transplant that is. The 327 for some reason started losing oil pressure after it warmed up and it started knocking. Just when I thought I was finished with this thing!! I think I've located a late model 350 with 61K miles on it for $500. Looks like its going to be a long weekend!!
Just got the 327 back for the 53 I'm building. Had it running, started pulling rocker studs, then apparently the carb was dumping gas and washed the rings before they seated. Pulled it in 3 hours, sent it back, got it in in 3. Just finishing up on hooking everything up, wiring, driveshaft, etc. Then hope for the best!.
Picked up th engine over the weekend. The previous owner really wasn't sure exactly what it came out of, but I googled the engine numbers 10054727 and see that it could have been anything from a pickup to a camaro. At any rate, I'm trying to resist the urge to slap on some fuel injection now that I think I finally got that figured out. I got lucky too in that the seller allowed me to use hos engine stand & cherry picker for as long as I needed. He even said that if I had any problems with it that he'd give me my money back!!
Robert, Sounds like you got a good deal and the seller is a good guy. I hope your engine swap goes well. Keep us updated! Damon
Here you go Zig. Still undesided on which type of fuel induction to use. I like the idea of the versitility of fuel injection, especially since I finially figured what was wrong the last time!
Dang that looks pretty, Robert! Did it come painted up, or did you do that? Are you going to have to change motor mounts for this swap? How about hooking up your transmission? Good luck with this and I hope you have some time this week to work on it!
Thanks Zig. I cleaned it up and painted it myself. I'm gonna use the mounts and flywheel from the 327. The tranny should bolt up without a hitch. Steve, we'll see about that.
Upgrades Use the fuel injection ~ Choose the one with an injector for each cylinder , you'll get more power & better fuel economy too . Avoid the F.I. setups with only one or two centrally mounted injectors .
Very nice looking engine. So what's involved in changing from carb to TPI. Going to look at a 350 with a 700R4 tomorrow and if I buy, I want to set it up to get good gas mileage. Rico
Fuel Injection TPI or TBI ? . You really want one with 8 injectors , not that crappo thing with two injectors in a false carby body . I am told the ' Mega Squirt ' F.I. system is good . I wish there was a nice one for the I6 engines .
It's not as hard as it may seem. The key is to buy a unit that's as complete as possible to keep from chasing parts. They're readily available on Craigs list, or Ebay and I'd imagine the salvage yards as well. You alsop have to decide if you want speed density (MAP) or mass air flow (MAF). If you don't have an in-tank high pressure pump, you can mount one on the frame rail as well. The '89 F150 work fine. Definately a multiport unit from a 85-92 Camaro or Corvette.
So I will need the complete TPI & computer with an intake manifold and won't I need some type of wiring harness to run both the computer an TPI? Thanks
The harness is readily available through several aftermarket sources, Painless Wiring, Ron Francis & Fuel Injection Connection to name a few. Many times I've found the etter deals on Ebay. I just bought a decent TPI setup today, offered the seller $140 & he accepted. Looking into a harness now.
