I have a 12v negative ground truck and I'd like to use the GMC electric temp. gauge, which I'm told is 6v positive ground. How can I do this? I have an electronic voltage reducer to 6v. If I use this, I think the gauge will work but backwards? Can I reverse the wires for the ground and power? (I can't remember if it grounds to the cluster or not).
The gauge cares not a whit about polarity ~ just mind the correct 6 volt power feed and the rest is gravy , connect as for 6 volt posative ground . Use a voltage regulator , not a resistor ! . Where's your link to pictures ? .
What Nate the Great said! Where's the pictures?! ANOTHER GMC??? I guess GMC Girl has left us though, huh? rats!
I'm not sure what connections it has on the back (I haven't gotten the gauge yet actually), is it a sender wire, 6v power wire, and a ground wire? (by the way, it's going into a Chevy v8 conversion )
One more question, what sender would I use (and where can I get one?) I heard it's part# 1511734 and it's 52ohms @ 180 deg.
Kevin ; What year tank are you going to use ? . The gauge has two terminals on it , the lower one , closer to the driver's side of the truck , is the power terminal . the other one goes to the sender . The gauge head *must* be well grounded via it's mounting to the gauge pod , pod to dahs , dash to frame etc. . Using new fasteners at each junction (stainless if possible) along with star washers , guarantees good grounds and an accurate fuel gauge . Read the recent posts about how to test the gauge head first , once it's working O.K. then and ONLY then you can move on to the sender... Use a Chevy gauge as it's the same as GMC in the AD's , only the face decal id different , Chevy Duty sells the dedcals to suit your taste , use a spray bottle of sopay water to help slide it into place then squeegee out the bubbles carefully without tearing the decal .
We're still talking about the temp. gauge, right? (Not the fuel gauge). I was looking at using the GMC one as it's electric instead of the capillary tube one for the Chevy. I got the decals, so I was planning on converting it to a Chevy look. It won't run backwards or anything using 6v regulated to the gauge?
D'oh ! Yes , the TEMPERATURE gauge , sorry kevin ! . Yes , the gauge head cares not a whit about polarity .
