I am new to the board, my truck and I just wanted to say "Hi!" This is my 1965 GMC Fleetside Longbed. It currently has a 1988 Chevy 350, a TH400, and Dana 60 with 4.10 gears. Attachments: https://talk.classicparts.com/images/attachments/3ff00953065c5c86.jpg
Ya, big back window. I put a slider in there. It's nice to be able to open that window up in the summer, gets a lot of airflow. Next job is going to be lowering it, and getting it painted. Then my engine swap.
Sounds like a swell plan of action--then that will be a reeaally cool pickup! Does your truck have leaf springs in the back? I'm interested in how the lowereing goes. Best of luck!
Ya, it has leafs. I have been told that it is a 1-ton suspension sitting in back. One of the spring perches has a pivot arm that can change the height, and it is all the way up, so it is about 4" lower than stock (I believe). I am thinking of doing the lowering technique of putting the axle saddles under the axle instead of on top of the axle and running the leafs under the axle. This should drop it about another 4 inches. The only real downside I have heard to doing that is (of course) that it lowers the payload, and some additional problems with axle wrap under hard acceleration. I am not too worried about loosing the payload since this is not a work truck, and the axle wrap can be remedied with properly mounted shocks, and may be add on a control arm. (I saw a pic in Classic Trucks magazine with a control arm attached to the diff and the frame which would allow the diff to go up and down, but not rock fwd and backwards)
Well sounds like you have a good plan for your truck.my 61 has the coil spring suspension and i was thinking about useing air ride suspension out back to lower it. then use my torsion bars to lower the front. cowboy
