Hi - My name is Dickson, and I have a "new" 1951 1/2 ton GMC truck.

It's very original and pretty solid & complete. However, the engine is missing.

I've been told a lot of things from "put in a Chevy 235" to "drop in a 350"...I think that I'd be very happy with an original straight 6 GMC motor.

I'm told that good options would be the GMC 228/248/270/302 motors.

    1. Do you agree?
    2. What should I look to pay for a good one?
    3. Does anyone have one?
    4. Will adding these mean I have to swap to 12 volt, different engine mounts, different transmission, or non-torque tube rear end?

    Thanks a lot! Dickson

Welcome Aboard Dickson, enjoy the ride while you are here. Drop what you want in there if you want to keep it stock stay with the G motors.
It's your truck and it looks like a real good start. Thanks for sharing.

    You would.

    Right again...

    1. yep
    2. all over the map. take your time
    3. lots of places to look - speed shops, ebay, craigslist
    4. nope. It came with a 228 so the bigger ones should be just fine, also

You'll probably get all kinds of ideas here, but with a truck that looks that good, keep it simple...

Congrats on the GMC ! Mine has a later model 235 six which bolts right up to everything. I like your truck. Keep us posted on progress. Welcome to the site. As a lot of these guys will tell you, there's no such thing as a dumb question, and some of those same guys have virtually ALL the answers. There's a lot of knowledge available here. Use it as needed. Bill

    Welcome !

Just find a Hot Rodder who took his L O N G M O T O R out and buy it along with the trany etc. , it'll be cheap as no one wants these sturdy, robust almost unbreakable engines .
