    Hey Folks

Have`nt been here sinds june. The 1955 235 CI engine is running very well with the new installed Carter YF carburetor. But yesterday after starting up again i heard some noicy sound apearing from behind the push rods sidecover . Oil pressure is just fine, i know i have to adjust the valves again but are `nt the rods self regulating? Could there be going to litle oil there so it gets dry?

Be kind to give me some advice about what this noicy sound can be?

    Hydraulic Lifters

    Did I not warn you ? I did .

O.K. , warm up the engine and remove the rockerbox , determine which tappet
is clattering , grab your box wrench and flat bladed screwdriver , engine idling , adjust the tappet until the click _just_ stops , hold it there whilst you snug up the locknut .

Expect the valve to clatter anytime the engine gets really hot as the 235/261 wasn't designed for hydraulic lifters....

Massaging the oil pump to put out 45 # pressure @ 500 RPM idle and they'll (maybe) quiet down .

Use synthetic oils as they prevent sludge and crud from scrweing up the check balls in the lifters .

You did a gain and i wanted to thank you.

    Nate

Followed your advice and fixed the minor problem in a notime. Mentioning the synthetic oil issue Nate. I have used the mineral 20-50 SAE oil. I Understand that the viscose/SAE of the synt. oil is thinner and it will last longer, but Is that kind of oil that cleans the engine more or a less advicable to use in that old 6 cylinder ?

Thank you Nate , it is always nice talking to you. Have a great day. Martinius.

Good to hear it's all O.K. now but remember : clatter from hydraulic lifters in these engines @ hot idle is normal .

Synthetic oils are GREAT for these engines , if , when adjusting the valves you see lots of sludge built up inside the rocker box , then run it for no more than 50 miles and change out the new synthetic and filter when the engine is BLISTERING HOT , the sludge will go out with it , re-fill with 5W-30 synthetic oil and Motor on happily , be aware that synthetic oils seep a bit more but they are going to make your 235 last forever too .
