not so smooth bumper

i am trying to get the smooth bumper look. i have cut the heads off the bumper bolt and have welded the bolts to the bumper. my problem is after grinding down the welds i have some pitting. any suggestions on how to fill these pits. i want to get the bumpers chromed.

I'm new to this forum, and have just been reading through messages. Of course if you were going to paint it I would use body filler if the pits are very small. I would call the chromer and see what they suggest. I would suggest something like JB Weld, but I am unfamiliar with the chemicals used in the process, they may disolve it.

P.S. You can fix anything with duct tape, silicone, and JB Weld.

There was an episode of Trucks TV where he described how to do hidden bumper bolts. Sorry, I can't remember the procedure completly. What I do remember is:

. cut heads off bumper bolts
. fit the bolts into the square from the back using a large washer on the back, leaving a slight indention (vally) on the front of the bumper.
. tack weld the bolt and washer on the back side. The washer adds strength and distributes the stress when the bumper is mounted.
. on the front side, weld the bolt to the opening filling the indention with weld material.
. complete the welding on the back side, bonding bolt to washer and washer to bumper.
. grind off smooth excess weld material on front.

That's the way I remembered it...

Thanks for the info guys. I got some advise from "Professor Hammer" Ron Covell. He had several suggestions. One is to use silver solder to fill in the pin holes.

This might be to last but I hope its not. I was in a welding class last yeat and a guy came and demostrated a tourch that sprayed metal. He demostrated it on headers that he grinded deep into. He then let the students(me and a few others) try. I thought it was great! If you like I could try and get a web site address for the info.
