Hello Folks, I'm trying to learn the purpose and proper orientation of the ofset washers that go under the heads of bed mounting bolts. Can anyone help? My truck is a '53 1/2 ton. thanks, Caleb
Caleb, the offset washers are designed to keep the bolt from turning when you are tightening up the nut from underneath the bed.
Re:Offset washers Also, the washers will center themselves as you tighten the bolts. Just drop them in the precut holes in the bed wood, insert bolt and crank it down.
That's good to know - but I made the boards here and don' have any pre-drilled countersunk holes. I need to cut them myself. I just need to know the orientation. I guess it ditn't occur to me that the offset keeps the bolt from spinning. Usually a square ped in a round wood hole takes care of that but the offset washer looks interesting too. thanks, Caleb
caleb, here are a couple of websites that you might find info on for your bed. www.mar-k.com and www.chevytrucks.org/jeff
Looks like you'll need to pick up a "Forstner" bit to make the proper holes. You can google it better than I can explain it here.
Hey folks, thanks for the info. After reading the replies and then looking at the wood and the washers and my neighbor's all original '58 GMC, it suddenly all made sense. thanks, Caleb
