A couple of weeks ago, my Dad came down bearing gifts. He had a buddy who just happened to have some parts off of a 216 engine. One was an oil filter and the other was an oil bath air cleaner. They were free to a good home. My first question is does my 216 need the oil filter? I would like to use the air cleaner as my truck does not have the original on it. My second question is what is the best way to clean these parts for painting? Any do's or don'ts? Thanks for the help!
Do NOT under any circumstances bead blast the oil filter cannister or the air filter. Mine is a work truck so painting these parts is not an issue. I used degreaser, brushes, rags to get the grime off followed by a rinse of starting fluid in the aerosol can. It's ether and evaporates the residue right off the part. I just put the parts back on clean and still not repainted. I suppose probably the best method to avoid contamination with abrasive material would be to use a chemical paint remover. Andy
Jeff, in answer to your question about whether or not your engine needs an oil filter, my response would be: you got one for free, use it. Any filtration is better than none. If you want to paint them, go down to Super wallyworld and get some liquid paint stripper and put it on them after you've de-greased it. Make sure you wear latex gloves when using that stuff because it will burn your skin.
You can scrape and wire brush the old paint off too ~ . Don't let anyone tell you that By-Pass filter isn't good , that's B.S. as it is a good thing . Use ATF in the air filter after it's re-painted glossy black , you'll be amazed at how much old dirt falls into the dirt cut in a few months ,keep changing the ATF every time it turns black .
Ha Jeff, If you want I have a good home for the air cleaner. Would look Great on my old '54. Send me a PM if you decide to not need it. I agree with the group put the oil filter unit on. CP has replacement hoses fairly cheap and is a easy install. Anything will help those old motors.
Hey Steve, I was really looking for the air cleaner. This all started with me just mentioning to my Dad that I wish I could find an oil bath air cleaner as the truck didn't have one. He asked around and found one for me. The oil filter was a bonus. I'll let you know if for some reason it doesn't work out though.
Search old posts for "oil filter". There's a recent thread showing pics of location of lines and everything. One of your lines was reapired and the other has been cut with the fitting missing. I repaired mine but I had all the fittings. New ones are cheap enough if you're not on a tight budget like me. Andy
