NOTE : this on a non GM vehicle so stop reading now if it'll bother you .....

I decided to do some routine lubrication service on my old Ural Moto to-day , when I pulled out the magnetic oil drain plug , a drop of water ran out followed by the usual black engine oil , thin like water from the polymer
chain having been chopped up by the straight cut timing gears ~ looking at the magnet , I saw some sharp looking SWARF , a 3 MM woodrfuff key and a short bit of safety wire or perhaps part of a wire typ circlip

The tranny was the usual green gear oil as it drained out ~ waitaminute ! this thing uses engine oil in the tranny ! this green color means the speedo cable seal is again leaking and allowing wash and rain water to run down it and into the gearbox

The final drive had just enough gear oil to reach the dipstick , not taking _any_ chances , I drained & re-filled that too ;) .

As far as I can tell , the heads have never been off this engine so I guess Ivan dropped the woodruff key in as the engine was being assembled .

I took a nice hard test ride down to South Central L.A. and fixed some window screens for SWMBO , it ran fine , there and back , so I guess all is well .

If not , it'll blow up and I'll snivel a bit then fix it , using better quality Western bearings & seals plus I'll do some basic blueprint work on the heads as they're rough , cobby buggers as built .

Nate, I'm dying to ask you this question. Does that bad boy have a sidecar? Every pic of a Ural I've seen has one! That's the only way I'd ride one nowadays!

Do they really have woodruf keys in those things? Sure its not a woodrufski:confused: Could be a commie plot; sell mortorcyles in the US and then after 30 years the keys all fall out and everything stops:D

I had 2 "hacks", both on BMWs. A Jupiter on a 75 R90 and a fiberglass (can't recall the name of it) on an R60US. Hacking it wasn't really too bad. Had to build up those chest and forearms... Really a hoot in the mountains though. Recall one time on a reverse camber turn that i ended up looking up to see my wife about 3 feet above me; her expression was "priceless".

O.K. , here ya go ! it was built with a sidecar but I don't cotton to them so I left it behind in Washington when I bought it .

I ride it as a Solo , pretty much everywhere ~ think of it as a Russian tractor with only two wheels . :)

So what the hey! Another picture of our leader, but just like the avatar, it won't enlarge so I can see what the heck he, or his bike, looks like! Nate, I guess you're destined to be a pin sized dot on my screen... Any other "Attached Images" open up to a viewable photo, but I click on yours and nothing happens!
