Can anyone tell me where the oil filter on a 1959 Chevy is located? The engine is a 235 striaght six. I have looked everywhere and cannot seem to find the oil filter. Also does anyone no where to get a replacement carb for that engine? It is a carter type yf. Thanks
Oil filters were add-on options for these engines. Most people put on what is referred to as cannister oil filters. They generally were mounted on the exhaust manifold. Here's a picture of the one I put on my 235. Hope this helps. Ken
My granddad ran a Gulf service station/garage for years and when he retired, dad and I scarfed up all of the parts he had in his shop, of which the oil filter was one. This oil filters are still available if you look long enough. I've seen them on Ebay, seen them at swap meets, etc. Just be sure to get all of the hardware for it if you find one, such as the U-bolts and fittings. NAPA and others FLAPS still carry the elements and most Flaps can still make new lines for you also.
I did notice you have the same air filter that is on my 59 Chevy. How does the filter housing come apart so you can clean the element? I cannot seem to get mine apart for cleaning.
Ken, Is that an AC oil filter canister? Can you tell me how to install the hoses and where they hook into the engine? What size element do they use 5 or 6 inch? I just won an AC oil filter cannister on e-bay for $27 that is supposed to be for a GM is this a good deal. The inlet and outlet fittings are missing. Do you know what type fittings they take and what size? Thanks for all your help. That is one beautiful truck you have. Hope mine will be there one day.
Yes, the one on mine is an AC oil canister SC-653. Here's a link that will show you how to install. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/miscellaneous/oilcanister.htm BTW, I saw your thread on oil bath air cleaners and posted a couple of pics for you there. Ken
Mine takes the 5" element and most FLAPS carry them. So does our host, Classic Parts. Wait until you get yours in hand to verify what size you'll need.
Ken, I went to install my canister and there is already a t where the oil pressure line is with a line leading to the passenger side of the engine and connecting into the cylinder head. I have also noticed the oil pressure guage fluctuating at idle from low to high. There seems to be less fluctuation after the engine warms up. Any suggestions? Can I still install the oil filter? Could I have a blocked oil passage? Can I put another t on the existing t? Thanks
Anyone ever run into this problem? I think what I m seeing is a standard GM repair for a blocked oil passage to insure oil gets to the rocker arms, but I am not sure. Can anyone tell me what is the best way to install my AC oil filter canister and where the inlet hose should connect if there is already a t on the oil pressure line? I have seen the instructions on this forum. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
u-bolts ken u-bolts are availible at any auto parts store thats where i got mine. there the same ones they use on mufflers i got mine at pep boys dont know if you guys have them where you live but any parts house or muffler shop.
Ron, Thanks for the reply. I am still trying to figure out why there is already a t where my oil pressure line is connected with another line leading around to the other side of the engine and connecting into the cylinder head. Should I install anther t and connect the inlet hose and oil pressure line off of the existing t? Surely someone else has run into this same problem. Just want to make sure I get the oil filter canister connected properly. Thanks
Anybody? Gotta be someone on here that knows about this. Just trying to get my filter installed. Thanks
picture may help dont know why one line goes around other side but this is the correct set up i hope it helps
