i was replacing the push rod cover gasket, and when tightening the bolts down, i snapped the head off. i really wasn't cranking that hard on it, which makes me worry about the others, but now i have an issue to deal with. i guess i could drill it out, but i'm a little leary of that one, since i have no way of pulling the engine, and it's in an awkward place (it's one of the bottom ones, just forward of the distributer) could be worse, but still not completely accessible. also, where might i find replacement "stovebolts"? thanks in advance. jon
Removing Broken Bolt ? 1/4" bolt/screw holding the side cover on the tappet chest ? . Once you remove the cover and set the engine to the timing mark and remove the dizzy for acess you should be able to carefully tap it 'round in circles with a small chisel or sharp screwdriver . The bolt may have been stretched by a DPM , I've had it happen before to me .........
Dpm!!! I'm all over it! Darn Pestky Mule! ~but what's that got to do with a bolt? If any of you were in the military, tell me- Doesn't our fearless leader use abreviations as much as Uncle Sam with a set of orders??? There's still a few I haven't cracked, but I love the mental challenge! Jon~ if the bolt's in a hard -to-get-to place, this might be the perfect time to join me in a "frame off" (fill in the blank)! That's how total house remoldels begin! (I was just trying to loosen the bolt on the comode...)
right on guys. once again, i am indebted to your years of knowledge. thanks a million. and yeah, i've already started thinking about the "one more step" deal, zig. i started out just changing the oil, then i thought, while the oil is drained, i'll clean out the oil filter and change the hoses. then i thought, why not replace that leaky oil pan gasket, or better yet, ALL those leaky gaskets? then i cleaned out the oil bath air filter and replaced it with ATF, and took a rag and some simple green to the carburator while that was off. now i'm looking at installing the cooling system filter to pass the time while i wait for the new oil pan gasket. it's a never ending cycle, but at least i'm making progress, eh?? jon
You said a mouthful there, Jon! But always remember that they are there for one reason!~ To drive, enjoy and to make those GMC guys jealous!
Zig ; ...It means : Darn Previous Mechanic Although most of the Mules I've worked with fit your description well enough Jon : what you're doing is called " Might As Wells " and they're the bane of every old truck / car nut
