I may have a 235 with open drive trans from a 55 1st series truck. Can any parts swap from my 53 trans to make the new one closed?

Your 235' should just bolt right onto the 216's bellhousing, if the 55' has a saginaw you can use it too. Your engine mounts will even work. If you want the saginaw you will need Pat's adapter to fit your closed shaft, or use the 55' entire drive line which I think is the smartest. I have done it both ways. Its one of the easiest and cosmetically neat swaps going. It about doubles your HP over the 216 with a few modifications.

    Ol' Cheb,

I have a '55.1 that has a '54 trans and rear closed driveline. I have been wanting to find a 55.1 trans and rear open driveline. Let me know if you are not going to use some or all of that please.

B.J. may have some more of them, I'll check. The box in the 53 has a whine that quieted when I filled up the gearbox with oil, but is still there. It seems to work fine otherwise. The rear seems to have had a gear change in the past, because it ran 65 on the way home when I bought it and didn't seem to be straining, in fact felt like it had plenty more. I can get the whole open driveline, but this truck is so origional, I Have been debating about changing it all out. The owner wants a driver to play around on the farm and the polo fields, so I may just swap it all out.

    trans conversion

Patricks earlyer made conversian kit is not taken into new production yet i`d think?

Do you guys have any information about where i could buy the conversian kit to install the Saginaw 4 speed to connect it to the 235 engine with the open driveshaft ? I think that the conversian kit includes the old style long floorshifter and rubber boot , new floorplate with squire hole , transmission-linkage ect doe`nt it ?

I do have a set off new synchro-rings and gaskets ect. for the 4 speed so that part is taken care of.

Should i replace the rearend part from the old Saginaw 3 speed(on the colum) over to the 4 speed to make it fit between bellhousing and drive axle?

    Hey flashlight

I am just doing fine. Thanks for your respond and your information to. I`ll make the phoneall again to Patricks in a week or so. As i know you have experiences from before changing the transmissions the same way as i have thought ?
Is the rear 3 speed transmission housing part innerchargeble with the sagianaw 4 speed or is the 4 speed a bolt in transmission wihout the for changing any parts in between ?

    Gruss gutt Martinius.

"Alles ist in ordnung", I'm sure that Nate or Evan will know for sure. To my knowledge the saginaw 3 speed and the Saginaw 4 speed, as well as the Muncie 3&4 speed all have the same length and bolt pattern and are interchangable. Interchangeable in an open shaft rear-end only. Patrick's conversion kit is for a 4 speed Saginaw only to fit into the space of your old tranny, between the bell-housing and closed shaft torque tube.

I think you have a Saginaw 4 speed, and your plan is to use that. Let me know if that is your plan? That's what I did. See how many rings are on your input shaft and follow Pat's advice on the correctly geared tranny to buy.

    Good-luck!

    Hey again Flashlight

This is what i want to do.Take out the colum device and the old not synchronised 3 geared tranny. Then put in the saginaw 4 speed with the wide gear that Patricks recommend. The 4 speed tranny has 2 grooves on the input with 10 splines and 27 splines on the output. I allready have installed the 3.55:1 ratio in the rearend from before.

Patricks booklet about using the conversian kit together with installing the 4 speed tranny wich i have is`nt so easy to read you know ? The pictures are to small ect. The conversion kit booklet does not really says what i need when installing the Saginaw 4 speed.
Just want to know what parts i need from this conversion kit to be able to install the 4 speed tranny without any trouble ?

Ther are not too many parts in the kit. It is mainly a shortened mainshaft inside the tranny, with a custom casted tailpiece on the tranny to replace the old one and bolts up to your torque tube. Overall, it makes a shorter, but essentially the same transmission.

Buy his rebuild kit, unless you have one from any other supplier. He then has a custom shifter from Hurst, it is a Competition plus shifter of very nice quality. He may offer a floor sheet metal transmission cover, but I made mine. The shifter comes out in a different place on the floor, I had to get a new rubber floor mat.

It makes the whole truck drive like new and happily in modern traffic.

    Wiederhoren!
