Its out of my 1966 fleetside longbed which i belive had a 283 origanally in it. The truck had a 350sb when i got it with this tranny and i was told it was the original from the second owner, im now the third owner. Thanks for all you help!!!!
If THIS is what the other side looks like, then YES, it's a SM420. Lot's O fun draggin that itty-bitty trans around Huh ? Val
Thanks Dval, You Aint Kidding!!!! That Thing Wieghts As Much As An Anchor For A Cruise Ship!! If This Guy Buys It, Ill Have To Rent A Crane To Get In The Back Of His Truck. How Much Do You Think I Should Sell It For? Thanks Again Dennis
Yep its a sm420, thats what I have in my 61 4x4. Price wise, $150 to $300 if its in good shape. Maybe more? I'm just taking a guess. Jeremy
EXACTLY, I JUST WISH I HAD MORE "GOOD CONDITION" PARTS TO SALE THAT IM NOT GOING TO REUSE. I HAVE ALL THE ORIGANAL SUSPENSION, BRAKES AND STEERING GEAR, BUT I THINK EVERYONE ALREADY HAS THAT STUFF.
Yeah, that's an sm420. Mounstrously heavy. Mine fell off the jack onto my finger when I was installing it with my son in my '55 first. Split it wide open and broke it. Thought for sure it was off and was afraid to take the glove off, but it was still attached, thank God. Wound up using my engine hoist through the hole in the floor to install it. Should have thought of that first. Great tranny, but man is it heavy. Desirable, too. I would pay a pretty penny if I wanted one. Got mine for $150.00, but would have spent $250.00 easy. If yours looks as good inside as it does outside that is. Hey dvalentine, is that a PTO off the side of the tranny in your picture? Nice, if it is. Mine doesn't have that. Not that I need it, but it's a nice thing to have on a farm truck. Andy
Not sure WHAT that is. The picture came off a Jeep web site. The SM420's are real popular with the extreem off-road folks. If you run across a 4x4 swap meet that would be the place to sell it. I got a replacement at a wrecking yard for $75. There was evidence of water in the case by visible rusting on the tops of the gear clusters, but it was still full of 90 weight gear lube and the shift forks moved the clusters easily. I installed it with the old lube still in it, then drained it. It wasa weird as all the water was held on the bottom by the heavy gear lube. When I opened the drain on the case it was like a fire hose for a second or two. Refilled it with 90 weight, and it served me well for a year or so till I did the 700R4 swap. FYI: installing that trans with a cherry-picker through the door and down through the cab floor is the exact procedure described in the service manual. I got mine in by attaching a chain loop to the trans and with a long steel bar hooked over the clutch pedal, lowered it in while my son wrestled it in position. ( going through every cuss word know to mankind ) Removal ??? Unbolt it and RUN like hell !! Val
I have a engine hoist, but for some strange reason me and a buddy decided to man handle it. Never again, that is one heavy SOB. Next time, if there is a next time that hoist is going to get a work out!!
You Guys Arent Kidding About The Weight Of The Sob's. When I First Got My Truck I Had My 5ft 105 Pound Wife Help Me Yard It Out. Im Pretty Patient And Try To Do Things Carefully, But That Didnt Keep My Wife From Giving Me Plenty Of Four Letter Words. The Guy That Is Interested In My Tranny Is Jeep Offroad Guy. D Val, Your Right About The 4x4 Guys Loving These Trannys. More Power Two Them. Its Hard To Race Down The Street In Such Low Gears And All That Extreme Weight Sure Doesnt Help. Thanks For All Your Help Everyone, Sorry To Hear About Your Fingers. One Of These Days Im Going To Invest In A Lift, There Only Around $1,500 Or So. I Love Using The Ones At Work, They Make Life So Much Easier.
I too found out how heavy 4 speed trans. was here while back, the one out of my parts truck, those trans. can cause real bad injures to arms, fingers head, glad I sold mine to someone who needed it. .
