Several have asked about the interchangability between the factory 3sp and the Borgwarner OD trans. They are a straight swap since the OD was an option. Same length, shifter, splines, and driveshaft. As you can see, they just stuffed the OD unit into the tailhousing of the 3sp. The speedometer cable drive is moved rearward to the output shaft behind the OD unit so the speedometer reads right. Have no idea why the rusty colored bent piece of strap iron is on the very nasty dirty 3sp. Must be used with an open driveshaft. Takes 15 minutes to wire up the electrics.

    overdrive transmission

Evan the only thins i had noticed when i change my trans to the o/d tran is the two bottom bolt holes had not threads so i had to use a nut and lock washer second was the spline for the yoke was wider so i had to change the yoke both no big deal still love the o/d set up.i think its cool when i shift into regular second gear get the rpms up let off the gas a little than it shifts into o/d like an automatic trans.step on the gas again and your flying:D

You lucky dog, you have the fully synchronized OD if it has finer splines. I think they started this in the mid to late sixties. The earlier units have the course splines. We can Heli-coil the lower ears so it bolts up completely original but it's easier to use bolts/nuts.

    Side Plates

One of the threads here said to swap the side plate from the original 3 speed on the OD; but the guy I bought mine from said all I should have to change are the shift ears (different length for 3 on the tree vs. floor shift). Can you confirm? I would like to leave the original trans as complete as possible.

Is it also true that the original trans can be used for parts (gears, etc.) as they are all the same ahead of the OD unit (apart from the synchro / non-synchro change mentioned above)?

    Thanks!!
