So ; My poor '69 C/10 has been sitting getting dusty in a high end restoration shop for several months now , yesterday I went by another shop that does show cars and the occasional stock restoration , he says to bring my truck and spare cab by so he can write me an estimate , he's busy but not so much he cannot take on a new job . I hope this works out , I've been using my old Hearse and Mercedes to haul junk in and this pi$$es me off quite a bit as I bought the truck to WORK , not as a ' Hobby Truck ' . Wish me luck ! (again !) .
Nationwide body shop virus... Nate, I feel your pain. Why do body shop guys take on work just to push it way in the back and never work on it? Thats why I usually paint my own stuff. Took my original doors by a shop that has done work for me in the past to see if they would repair the rust and put 'em in primer. I could tell he was not really interested, told me I could buy repops for $400 give or take. I was already aware of that, want to keep as much of the original truck as possible. If you go somewhere else, BE FIRM and tell 'em you expect weekly progress! Then go see every week. GOOD LUCK!
Yeah, paint jail, I've found the only thing that will get you out quick is copious amounts of money. Time: One of the major reasons I did the faux patina deal to my truck, the other major reason was money. Good luck!
I have NO plans to give anyone both my truck and $ until works are being done ! . It looks like we're set to go to - morrow .
Thumbs Twiddling I sure hope so ! . It's there now and he says 8 MONTHS but I am hopeful he's saying that so I'll be happy when it's sooner . No truck makes for a very sad Nate .
The Waiting Is The Hardest Part Yes it is , this guy hasn't had it 8 months yet . I got back from saying good bye to my Pops who's in Hospice Care out of state , went by yesterday and they've taken off the hood & front fenders , he says they cab goes in for bead blasting Thursday next so I am hopeful . I have actually found two other short bed step sides that might be for sale and am considering buying one just to use until my rig is done , I'm in need of a truck and cannot be carrying old greasy engines , trannies and cherry pickers in borrowed truck no matter if they're not restored ~ I know no one who actually uses their truck new or old , to work with .
On A different Note Charles , I need you to look at a photo of an old pedal car , I believe it's a Fire Chief car as it has a bell on the hood . What is wrong with American workers these days? Why do bodymen everywhere do this? My Camaro flippin' cousin has had his car in a bodyshop ALL summer and the guy missed three agreed deadlines already. The car was supposed to be done by Aug. 1st, then Aug. 15th, then Labor day. It's still there only half done now!!! If I agreed to haul somebodys freight and performed like that, I would never get another job!
Slight Progress That's a good question ! . Always it has been so . I went by again Saturday ad the door are off and the bed has begun taking apart and I didn't see my new/used cab anywhere so maybe things are getting going at last . I just found a $300 292 I6 engine complete and cheap so I NEED my truck ! . Dammit .
Yeah, and add in lots of Mary-jane, it's a wonder they work at all. However, my older brother says years of diesel fumes have affected me. Maybe so, my wife says I'm stuck in my teens mentally.
Progress ! Some anyway ; My new (used) cab has been bead blasted and primered to retard surface rust , it's now inside the shop and he flipped it and looked at the *PERFECT* floor , shot it with glossy black paint , I had to remind him I want it entirely FORESTER GREEN like it was when new.... There's minimal rust repairs needed at the base of both A - Pillars . He's stripped and bead blasted both doors , nary a trace of rust anywhere on them . He also stripped and primed the hood , both front fenders and the replacement core support I gave him , re bushed all four door hinges (they really needed this) and says he'll soon be making faster progress on it . 4 months he's had it , I am pleased to see some progress at last . He commented that _now_ is the time to replace the air conditioning dash board in the new cab if I want , I took the plunge and decided to stick with it as I'd like to add AC if I possibly can . He says when he yanks out the engine and tranny in a week or two , I'll need to come fetch it ASAP as he claims no storage space although I saw the other (non GM) brand engines stashed here and there around his shop . Possible the local Low Riders will want to steal it ? I cannot imagine this but whatever , now I need to go borry a trailer and drag it home , I guess I'll overhaul it whilst he's painting things .
More progress ! O.K. , I went by Paco's Shop and the new cab is ready for paint , he didn't like the rust bubbles in the rockers so he replaced them complete . He doesn't like that I want the underneath of the cab floor painted the trucks color (green) as the show rigs he usually does always have black floors to better off set the undercarriage.... I don't care , this is my Shop Truck and it'll be done my way . He also wanted to powder coat the frame , nuh- uh ! epoxy primer them good old chassis black for me . Anyone know the hot set up for the door rubbers ? the originals are cheap and nasty , someone told me Dodge Dakota or something uses the same shape with a metal insert , fits , works and lasts better but I forget what Dodge....
Forward movement! That's good news, Nate. I'm with ya on NO powder coat!!! Once rust gets started under powder coat (and it will), it's horrible!!! Pictures...
Photo time the frame just before it was loaded onto a truck to be bead blasted . the pile 'o parts left over . look closely and you can see the COMPLETE SEPARATION of toe board and cab floor along the pinch weld ! . when I turned corners , the floor was steady but the CAB shifted all over the place about 1/2" .
