Any suggestions out there on how to get the old paint off of my truck before having new paint applied. Can I do this sort of thing myself? What about primer, should I do this myself or have a body shop do it?
There are many ways to strip paint. I had my truck torn down so I used a chemical paint remover for a lot of it and then sanded with 80 grit and then 150 grit I believe. Some of the truck I sand blasted to remove some embedded rust. As far a painting is concerned, you should have the proper equipment. A good compressor with a filter system. And a good spray gun. You cant just prime after going down to bare metal, you have to use a metal prep prior to painting. You also should pour the paint through a filter, to get any foreign material out. Not as important as the finish coat but a good idea nun the less. It is a lot of work because you cant just prime then finish paint without a lot of sanding repriming and finishing with a good wet sand. I did my own and it was a ton of work, but it turned out really great, and I have never done this so extensively before. Good luck!!! phantom
Aircraft stripper works great, smell bad. Sand blasting removes hard to get to areas. Primmering all depends on if you have done it before. It's a very important part of the paint process,It's the foundation of a good paint job, so it's very important.
If you have not already stripped it , you might try finding a place that repairs/restores Vettes. Some of them do plastic bead blasting, and will do other makes of vehicles for a decent price when they are slack. Butch
