Got my 54 chevy truck changed over to 12 volt, put new set of plugs and plug wires. Got plug wire from classic parts, but as I understand they are made to look like original and have a naked end that goes to the plug. I drove my truck this past Sunday Morning to church and it was running great for about 20 miles then in started cutting out on me. Cold and sunny that morning, about 30 degrees. On the way back home it cut out all the way back. I am just wondering if maybe the plugs are arcing accross by not having a rubber boot on them or it could be in my carberator. The truck idles great and runs at slow speeds great, but when put it to speed starts cutting out. Any opions out there.
Well ; Wait untill dark and run the engine to see if there's any arcing going on , the naked plug connectors shouldn't be any problem .
Found the problem in truck cutting out. Since I switch over to 12v the extra electrical current must have been arcing over when I got to Highway speeds with the naked plug wire ends. I found an old set of plug wire and pulled the boot ends off and was able to fit them over the plug wire ends I got from classic. Truck is running good.
