Has some off you maybe a good picture or scetch that shows how to mount up the plugwires from the ignition cap towards the plugs ? Martinius.
Plug Wires I don't , this info is in the shop manual.... BTW Martinus , the correct firing order is : 153624 . Want to know how to never forget it ? Think about GIRLS : 15 is tooYOUNG 36 is tooOLD ! 24 is juuuuust right ! BTW : if you want to loop up the plug wires & make 'em look nice , use two fat O-Rings , three wires looped through each one , looks very tidy . Or , look at the tappet covers on a 1937 216 engine , it has two metal loops on it for the plug wires , once you know what they look like , adding them to your 235/261 tappet covers is a simple thing , trim 'em out , weld/solder into place then re-paint and they'll look factory . I , personally , don't like metal spark plug wire holders but using these with a set of hand made bumble bee wires , ensures YOUR engine looks better than anyone else's at the Show & Shine Meets... (does anyone still make the bumble bee spark plug wires ? I *think* I fished a N.O.S. roll out of the trash 30 years ago)
Reply to Nate 153624 ridle is amusing to read, i laughed much of it. It could be a funny issue discussing how girls in different ages like the old chevy trucks ? To start with the age of 15 36 and 24. I found the diagram in the shop manual and connected them the right way.The Pertronix plug wires+ flame thrower coil + el.tronic ignition device is now installed. Still waiting fore my old mecanic friend manages the exhaust/inlet manifold. The NOS Carter carburettor YF looks great and i hope it will do its function? Thanks again fore all the good advices and have a great summer. Martinius.
Glad You Liked It ! But , be aware that the position of the # 1 spark plug wire can vary significantly from the picture in the FSM due to someone installing the distributor in a different position . How to check ? Easy - peazy : Set engine to the TDC point as inicated by lining up the timing pointer in the little window above the starter , with the chevron or triangle marks stamped in the flywheel very close (7*) to the ball bearing you normally use to time the engine , now , remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is pointing to where your # 1 spark lug wire is connected ... It is ? good , job well done . it isn't ? don't panic , if it's 180 (1/2 circle) out try to see if it'll run , if not , re-position the engine to TDC and simply move all the wires beginning with the # 1 wire over the rotor's tip and don't worry about it . Or , go look up " Distributor Installation " and have some fun (not) , get it bang on dead nuts correct again . BTW : the firing order thing is cute but I am not fond of 24 YO girls anymore than I am of modern trucks ~ I need a woman (or rig) that's been around the block and knows what she wants and what to do , less time wasted thata way & everyone's happier
Nate Easy - peazy : Do i understand this right Nate that you mean i should put the triangle marking at 7 o clock and put the ball bearing in position together with the timing pointer? Or do you mean that i must line up the triangle marking together with the pointer? The rest i understand. Thank you Martinius.
Setting For TDC For TDC , set the triangle or chevron in line with the pointer . For ignition timing , dynamic or static , align the ball bearing with the pointer . See ? it IS Easy-Peazy ! I hope this helped .
This old saw again... Well everyone, I am soon to put my parts back on my 228. )Including one slick looking oil bath breather from Ken!) I was reading over this thread an I "think" I know how to proceed, but let me run all this by you guys again. I can't find that I took a picture of where the rotor on my distributor was when I pulled the distributor. God was with me when I shut it down last time, because the ball bearing is right with the pointer on the bell housing! Reading these posts, I guess that can be a good thing... My questions are these: 1st, I assume my stock distributor is going to be good enough for regular driving/starting/smooth running. 2nd, I recall reading that points are NOT the same. I'm going to convert my 6 volt to 12 volt, so what do you think about points and coil? Finally, getting the distributor down into the oil pump shouldn't be too bad, because I have previously dropped the pan, cleaned things up, but held off on putting in a new gasket just so I can make sure the distributor shaft is in the pump slot. Once I put it back in, my question is what plug would the rotor need to be pointing at? Is the ball bearing 180 degrees from the chevron? Does this make it number 3 cylinder that needs to be on call? Your advice will be greatly appreciated as usual! Hope everyone is getting ready for a great and wonderful New Year!
Ign. Timing Service Notes The chevron (or triangle) is right near the ball bearing on the flywheel . BB is for ignition timing , chevron/triangle is for TDC , used in dizzy installation and more accurate full advance timing using the dynamic stroboscopic timing light . they line up n either the # 1 or # 6 cylinders @ TDC , no other . Rotor tip should be pointing straight away from the engine (90 degrees out) but it's not overly important , just remember the simple firing order : 1 , 5 , 3 , 6 , 2 , 4 easy to remember if you think about Women : 15 is TOO YOUNG 36 is TOO OLD 24 is JUST RIGHT . Remember the helical drive gear will cause the rotor to rurn a little bit as the dizzy slides into place , don't let this throw you and if the oil pump drive doesn't quite line up , move it by using an un bent coat hanger bent to a dogleg at it's bottom end..... Stock dizzy is fine , points are god too . Pertronix " Ignitor " is better , write the Pertronix Co. wit the Delco part number off the tag on your dizzy , they'll tell you the correct part number to order then you can shop arond as the prices vary wildly . If you have a boxfull of ditributors , grasp the top of the shaft and see if they wiggle , you want the one with the least amount of side play in it . If you're retaining the pedal starter , use an internally resisted ignition coil , epoxy filled of course . I hope this helps .
Thank you, Master~ Thanks, Nate! Just to make sure... #1 wire over tip of rotor, then #5 clockwise from that, and so on, right? Any plug, plug wire, or epoxy filled coil better than the rest when it comes to 12 volt conversion? You wrote, "...write the Pertronix Co. with the Delco part number off the tag on your dizzy..." Where might the tag be? Thanks again, Nate! Paul
Ignition Yes , anytime you're not sure of a firing order , just operate the starter with the dizzy cap off and observe the rotor's direction ..... I like/use/recommend NAPA Echlin brand coils but Accell yellow coils are terrific too , I use one on my Russian Moto for hot , l o n g sparks that are always white... just remove the decal and paint over the FUGLY yellow paint . I use copper core plug wires , VW Beetle plug wires , two sets to make one set for that long Chevy engine . I've seen some aftermarket plug wire kits thay say " solid metal core ! " on the box but are _not_ , they have the crappy ' filiment ' wires , you'll be able to _see_ a copper wire core . you'll need to find some plug connectors . Of course , if this info is for a GMC , give up now and crush it for scrap Just funnin' ya - put down that hammer !
Thanks, Nate! Once again, you've gone beyond reassurance. I now look forward to getting the dizzy back in and giving my L-O-N-G motor some "beetle juice"!
Not Me ! The ' reassurance ' is in that loverly l o n g , high nickle content cast iron , SEVEN main bearing wonder The Generous Motors Corporation put under the hood oh so many years ago..... Just think : if I can wheeze across the Mojave Desert in a junk Chevy 235 with impunity , you're good to go most anywhere , any time Never forget : " Valve In Head means Ahead In Value ! " .
Yes, YOU! I'm sure you can imagine how friggin' tickled I'll be whe I turn the key and put it in gear to drive out of the garage I built for it. It may run so fine and be so dependable, I might not give it a long rest until I hit your driveway~ Then I can pay you for, and tow back that rag top Nash you have...
