Thought Id share some pictures of the power steering bracket I designed and just welded together today. This bracket will mount a dodge (or GM) pump in the location of the generator/alternator, using the two bolts on the block. The alternator will be moved to the passenger side of the block via another bracket I designed. Currently waiting for those pieces to be laser cut and shipped. Will have them in a week or two. It ran me $45 to have the bracket laser cut and shipped. Got a little further today. Finished the bracket and painted it and mounted it on the motor. Once I get that welded together, painted and on the truck and the alternator mounted, I just need to get a correct length belt and set the tension. Hopefully should have that done in about 2 weeks.
Good Work One of these days I'll dismount my old Delcotron alternator and take pix showing how to easily modify the original generator bracket to suit alternators..... I'm sure you know to never , EVER bang the pulley onto a power steering pump ! use some AllThread and a couple flat washers& one nut else you'll ruin the pump by cracking the pressure plate inside it . Lastly , are you going to keep that engine red or paint it the correct gray ?? . Chevy trucks had gray engines.....
Thanks, yeah I knew about not pounding the pulley back on. The engine is staying the color that it is, Im not worried about keeping the truck original. Its a going to be a driver mostly, Ill take it to a few gatherings/car shows but Im not entering in any to be judged.
Got the pump mounted. My measurements were spot on, no modifying the bracket at all. When I designed the bracket I made it where I could shift the pump forward or backward as needed by using shims. I also designed the mounting holes to be elongated where it mounts to the block so I could adjust it further. It looks like it will be very tight and a pump with remote reservoir may be required, but Im not 100% sure on that, I don't have the inner fender in at the moment and the p/s pump maybe able to move some more yet.
please check my stovebolt post for updates. Im having the pieces cut out so I can test my design. Once I know it works the brackets will be available to those who want them. So far as I have not got any measurements for the later 235's and 261's yet, the bracket set will work for the 216 and early 235 (up to 1954). With the cost of getting the pieces cut out, welded together and such the set will run about $150. Updated pictures to come!!!
OK got my upper alternator mount I have some work to do so I can mount the belt adjusters. got my belt adjusters done, had them cut out locally. Will have pictures, dark out right now. I like this method alot better than the tie rod idea I was going to do. this way is much cheaper as far as cost and is a lot simpler in design. works well too.

Alternator/Power Steering Brackets Chris, I am a mechanical novice so please bear with my technical ignorance. I have a 5 window Chevy pickup that I would like to convert to power steering and alternator. In looking at your posts, it looks like you have it all figured out with brackets that house the steering pump where the generator was and moving the alternator above it. Am I correct in assuming that the stock crank pulley remains as a single pulley which runs the steering pump that has a double pulley which in turn runs the alternator ??? Dumb question for someone of your expertise but for me it's a different story. Your "kit" price of $150.00 does that include brackets and tension bars for both units, and how long does it take to get them ? Thank you in advance for your time. Nice work but I have 2 concerns though. First the slide adjuster bracket for the power steering pump appears to be a little light. my concern would be that it would crack on those 90 degree bends, maybe heavier material or gussets on the bends? Second where you have studded the head for your alternator bracket, Grade 8 hardware since your looking at about 90 Ft. pounds of torque on the head? I was able to come up with a set of ARP studs when I studded my block, they are well worth the money....Big Tim
