I have a 1984 Chevy K20. When I am turning at slow speeds the power steering makes a squealing sound and the steering wheel is very difficult to move. I have checked the fluid level and the belt for the pump. The belt is not loose and there is ample fluid in the pump. I was wondering if my problem is the pump or the steering box. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
double check the pump to engine brackets, mine was runing fine until i got off the highway coming to work then the bracket snapped, it had no tell signs, talk about a shock first thing in the morning! that'll get your attention, the pump could just be getting old and the bearings wore down, do you have alot of slop in your steering, if so and all your tie rod ends and all that is fine i bet it's your box, these trucks were notorious for failing early. Thanks for the input. The bracket appears to be okay, I had a feeling it was not going to be something easy. Thanks again.
