I am installing power windows. If I knew what a pita they were, I would have gladly be rolling my windows up. My wife said " wouldn't it be cool to have power windows", I should have said NO!! Anyway I have just about finished with the install part, my question is, how have some of you handled the wire to the door problem? The way the door swings forward and out really messes up the options. Any ideas??
 
I put them on the 50 I built. I ran the wire on top of the top hinge, then securely zip tied the wire to the hinge. There is plenty of room to run the wire through the hinge without pinching, Leave some slack for movement inside the kick panel.
 
You know it amazes me that a guy colud do all the suspension work,weld frames, build motors, and anything that come along, then look at a piece of wire and say, " I don't know how to run this wire"!! That's why I love this site! I like your idea, KISS, Why didn't I see that?

Although I hate them as they're _patently_ unsafe , I have seen some really clean Hot Rod applications using a set of button contacts that negates the need for dangling wires in the doorjamb .

You can operate the speakers this way too as they sell multi-contact strips .

So what's the problem ? the power windows will stop working the same time the doors jamb shut after any accident or you flip into a irrigation ditch , or it catches fire anyways , this is why I consider them patently unsafe . too many people DIE every year because of power windows .

I saw somewhere a guy had used a short peice of steel fuel line bent to the contour of the upper hinge and spot welded to it. run the wires thru the tube and you're done.
 
There is a thread about putting wires into the doors somewhere. The trick to it is the openings need to be one above the other with gromets or extension boots. Look at how the new cars wiring is to get a picture of what to do.
 
The problem with wire looms is that our doors swing out and foreward, instead of in an arc like a new car......swing yours and you'll see. This creates a pinch for looms. The tubing on top of the hinge is a neat and clen way to do it, but you can't put many wires of any thickness through them. If you are only running 2 wires you should be O.K..
 
Thanks for all the good ideas guys. I haven't decided which way to go yet, I'm still finishing the drivers door. I can't wait to get past the door assembly stage. After the doors comes exhaust and then sheet metal. I'm getting close. I'll post pics soon. Thanks
