Hi,

I'm trying to change the kingpin of my chevy 51 1/2 ton but I have problem with the bushings. I can put the bushings in the knuckle without tool. And the bushing can rotate in the knuckle.

I bought std and oversize kingpin but the exterior diameter of the bushings is always the same.

The new bushings are 0.005 inch smaller, but it's enough to move.

Is it normal that the bushings can move on the knuckle ? If not what can I do ?

Thank's in advance.

Kind regards.

Steve

RE: Problem with steering knuckle b

This is why it is so important to buy the factory shop manual ~ reading it would reveal the fact that these are " floating " typ kingpin bushings and so it's O.K. ~ they're normal .

The factory shop manual is only $20.00....

RE: Problem with steering knuckle b

Hi Nate,

Thank you for your information. I have got the factory shop manual and I asked a specialist of pickup restoration in my country and 2 others mechanical "what does it mean floating bushing ?" and no one knew.

But all said me that the bushing must don't move. Because the old bushings were fixed in the knuckle, I thought they have right.

Yet I found a person that will manufacture the bushing for my knuckle.

But for me the replacement of bushing will stay a mystery ! But I think you have right Nate.

The last question is "why the bushing type on a 1/2 ton are different then the 3/4, 1... ?

Kind regards

Steve
