I have put 73-87 Chevy truck rally wheels on my 66. Does anyone know of a good way to mount 60's era car rally wheel center caps on the truck rally wheels.
I have the same wheels on my 61, 5 lug mid 70's ralleys. I've looked at both styles and there is no way that I know of that this can be done . The truck ralleys were designed for center caps not hub caps. I have seen people put knock offs on the center caps and they look pretty good.
If you're talking about the type shown below (commonly called "derby" caps), I thinks it's going to take some creative engineering. They are made to snap into internal bumps formed in the wheel center. I believe the truck rally wheels have spring fingers on the face to retain the truck style caps. The ones shown in the photo are 5 lug by 5" bolt pattern, and any of the passenger car caps will fit (police, disc brake, or derby style). Be careful if you choose to buy the Corvette style rally wheels with the 6 lug bolt pattern. Most of them will only accept oversized police caps made specifically for those wheels (I found out the hard way). Standard Chevy rally wheel caps are too small.
Thanks for the update. I've never actually dealt with the late model truck rallys. I've learned something new today.
Rally caps I found a way to do it. I machined a jig to fit in the center hole of the wheel with a flange to the diameter that you need to hold on the rally cap. I brazed 4 pieces of 1/2" diameter bar about 3/4" long each to 4 places around the flange. This allowed the rally cap to snap on and stay. Here is a photo of the cap on the wheel. I think I am going to drill the 1/2" bars and drill and tap the wheels so they bolt on instead of brazing.
Rally caps These are photos of the jig and the lugs on the wheel. I welded these on. I made the jig out of an old Ford disc brake rotor I had.
Rally caps Thanks I had seen some of these on another truck but they had drilled holes in the caps and screwed them on. I knew there had to be another way to mount these caps.
Fantastic idea and a great finished result. That rim looks really unique with the slots and beauty ring in place.
