Need help! I'm rebuilding a '61 Chevy 235 six cylinder, and the gasket set I bought has two types of rear main seals. One is the wick type seal, and the other is an orange neoprene/plastic seal. The obvious question is--What was in there before? and the answer is that the guy who took the engine apart at the machine shop several weeks ago can't remember.
Second question--If the wick seal is the way to go, does it press all the way flush with the bearing cap and the groove in the block? When I get it rolled in as tight as I can get it there is still some above the surface, which doesn't let the bearing cap set down flat on the block. Can anybody help? Thanks!
