I was wondering what is the best way to repair a stering wheel? I was going to v-gruve the cracks and fill them with west system epoxy. After I have sanded everthing smoothe, what is the best way to finish off the steering wheel. Paint it , epoxy it or what???? Thanks, Herman
Here's the link to Deve's most excellent site and the how-to for steering wheel repair. I love Deve's site. It also has the valve adjustment procedure by our own Grand Poo-Bah on it as well I think our host site sells the paint that you will need for the finished product. http://www.speedprint.com/deves50/steeringwheel.php Andy
Steering Wheel Cracks You _MUST_ grind all the way down to the bottom of each crack or they'll come back . If you search the web , there's a tutorial I once read on this , they highly recommend washing (soaking in fact) the entire steering wheel in a hot water and TSP power solution first thing to get rid of all the 55 years of built up grease & sweat the wheel has soaked up before beginning ... Epoxy paint seems to work very well , consider color matching the steering wheel to the truck or it's interior . I have an ivory steering wheel that not only looks great but it never gets hot in the blazing desert sun like the originals do . Take your time and allow plenty of cure time between each step and you'll be proud of your handiwork .
