has anyone used the american autowire 18 circuit kit to rewire their trucks. I will be installing it into my 64 c10 and i'm having trouble figuring out where to start. any guidance would be greatly appreciated
Start by dividing out all the ciruits by where they are going. Under dash, tail lights, under hood ect.
Am Autowire Kit I did that exact installation about a year ago in my 66. You must begin with the main underdash harness... everything else branches out from there. Remove the glove box, instruments, and radio... maybe even the steering coumn. Take out the seat unless you are on the very petite side. Once you have done this preparation, you replace the fuse block and main distribution harness (all under the dash) and work out from there to:front light circuitry, engine/ignition, interior, rear lighting. All this stuff is in separate bags (with instructions) in your kit. Do one bag at a time and don't mix the parts up. You must custom wire in your guages depending on what you have- stock or aftermarket and guages or idiot lights. Advice- This is NOT the kind of thing you can do in a couple of hours. Remove what is in the way or you are in for a nightmare. Work slowly and be patent. Do not cut corners...they never show this on the hot rod shows, but it is always done before assembling the car.
Second advice- And keep ALL of the Am Autowire instructions and diagrams! I have mine in a 3 ring binder. If you ar not experienced, expect this job to take about a week working carefully 3 to 4 hours per day. This is a good time to replace carpet, and firewall insulation while you are under there.
thanks for the advice. I am close to being done. Everything works fine but the tailights are being difficult. they go on with the running light but go off when the headlights go on. Any ideas.
Cool... hope you enjoyed it as much a I did. Taillights are the one area where I kept my old wiring... I just spliced the old wires and circuitry in to the AA harness connectors because old wiring was good and color codes matched. Your Am Autowire schematic should help run that down, but you could call them if you get stumped.
