What kinda of rpm range does a 1963 283v8 have? thanks

What i really want to know is what the rpm redline is on a stock 283 v8 out of a 1963 chevy. Thanks Rick.
 
Don't know if you'll find a "redline" for it but I show it rated at 175hp at 4400 rpm and 275 ft lbs of torque at 2400 rpm.

If memory serves me right, it was screaming at 5,200 RPM and self destructing at 6,500 RPM.
 
Do you guys out ther think i can get 5500rpm safely from my 283? it will be slightly modified. i'm going to have 3.08 gears in the rearend. i'm going to use edelbrock three duece intake and edelbrock 2301 cam and roller rockers and new valve springs. do you guys suggets anything else.

I know that "back in the day" I got that out of a 283 using 327 heads and a mild cam. That was in a 57 210 with a 4 speed.

Today, I would now add one of the high performance distributer setups,you should be able to get that RPM range. With 308's you will need to wait a lot longer to get there though.

Well what do you think would be a good gear ratio then? i don't know what i have know but if it is close then i'll be keeping them.

I was thinking more about 3:38 for the rearend gear ratio in sted of 3:08's. WHat do you think

Probably a good compromise for MPG considerations....
 
a slightly modified 283 with comp cam roller rockers,286 cam,and edelbrock performer/ 625cm carb with fuelie heads will easily do 5500 with no engine damage whatsoever,as I have done it for the last 20 years with the same motor!
 
ljw have hit 6000rpm safely? i was thinking about rebuilding my 283 in a few months, years, or when i get the money. i would go with 10:1 compress. roller rockers comp cams xtreme energy cam xe274h, a custom crank shaft, either worlds sportsman II heads or s/r torquer heads.
bore it .030 over. the crank would be either a small journal 327, or a custom made 3.49 stroke crank. i would use 3.55:1 gears in the rearend of my truck too. do you think there is room for a 3.75 stroke or a 3.9 stroke?
