Found not one, but 2 s10 5 speeds with the mechanical speedo output on the same row yesterday in the U Pull It. Didn't even make it back to the classic section as I ran out of time. Might go back on Thurs. and see what else I can find.
Actually, with a spacer and an 86 Astro van clutch pack, they do. http://www.hotrodworks.com/catalog/index.php/t5-transmission-adapters.html
What is the primary purpose for swapping them, does that improve hwy speed? Also, what years on the s10 transmissions? You are a wealth of information and I humbly bow to you sir.
One word.....OVERDRIVE! The most sought after are pre 86 with the mechanical speedo output, but up to 92 will work fine, just has electronic speedo. They can be swapped, but requires the right parts. With an s10 4x4 rear swap, ( or Camaro, Nova, 95SS, 90s crown vic, 95 T Bird IRS, etc.) or a Colorado ( to keep 6 lug) you wil be modernized with open driveshaft, many choices of rear gearing, modern brakes, parts availability and HWY drivability. There are LOTS of tech articles written on the S10 T5 swap.
one from Martinius... https://talk.classicparts.com/showthread.php?t=18375&highlight=transmission+swap
The only way to make it better is if we could keep the column shift (5 on the tree?). Now, tell me you've got that figured out...
If memory serves, you have to find a non-World Class transmission, which is of the S-10, S-15, and Astro van variety. I have an '88 S-10 transmission with the cable speedometer drive for my project. I was told that the electronic speedometer drive came in as an option in '89, and became standard the next year. Not trying to say you're wrong, Russ... just going off the information provided me by the salvage yard and my experience thus far. The WC (World Class) version of the transmissions were usually found in Mustangs and some GM F-body cars. They can be used, but the tail cone has to be swapped out and the shifter relocated. Like Russ mentioned, the transmissions from the light pick-ups have the shifter in the ideal spot. The car transmissions have the shifter located at the rear and have a shorter tailcone. Damon
Actually, 88 was the last year.....my Sometimers was kicking in. Up to 92 will work, MID 93 is when they switched to the integral belhousing. I stuck a early 93(according to the tag) from a late 92 in the 53.....confused yet?
Short answer... yes. But thankfully I don't have to think about it much because I already have two transmissions. Damon
