We have been working on a 1941 International pickup which has a 400 sbc and did have a turbo 350 trans which the owner wanted to swap out for a SM420 granny 4sp standard trans. Had laying around a GM 10 bolt rear from (?) that has a 2.41 ratio. With it in place one now uses all 4 gears in the tranny since the final drive in 1st is close, 16.9 vs 16.3, to what one had taking off in 2nd gear and a 4.56 rear as was the standard with the granny trans in a 3/4T. The 400 handles the shallow gear in 4th just fine but one does have to be completely stopped to use 1st. Does seem strange to be using 1st gear when not pulling up stumps.

It does but since you've installed super high ratio final drive , it's necessary.

I once worked with a fellow who was nice enough but , he stupidly insisted in using the compound low in the 1962 Chevy C50 , every time he started from a dead stop .

He said it made him ' feel ' like he was going faster by dint of shifting more.... .
