A few weeks ago I swapped rear ends from a Chevy II to early 70's Camaro. During the swap I noticed that the spring shackles moved a bit back & forth. I initially thought they were worn but the more I thought about it, I thought that since the truck was originally equiped with a torque tube this may have been by design to enable the truck to handle rough roads. If that is the case, since an open drive line is in place, what's the chance of the of the drive shaft being pulled out from the transmission if the shackles move? Will they move that much?
Not much chance of it happening. The forward end of the leaf springs are allowed to pivot on the spring eye, but are otherwise fixed. Pretty much limits the rear axle to vertical movement.
Thought you had a 3/4~ Hey Robert~ I've always noticed that you had two stake pockets forward of the rear fender. Always thought that was signs of a 3/4 and beyond. You had a torque tube to start with?
The shackles are supposed to move to allow the springs to flex, as the springs flex they get longer from spring eye to spring eye. If the yoke on the drive line go's all the way in to your Trans. then back out about an inch when it's connected to your rear end then it should be fine.....Big Tim
