Shifting

[1 apache ride]

Have a 58 apache with 3 on the tree and having a problem pulling the shift lever up and into 1st and reverse from neutral or 3rd.. Have not done any work on steering or trans just started in the middle of a drive. Once it is in 1st gear it shifts great. Any ideas on a quick fix?

sounds like your shift lever bushings are in bad shape take a look at them and acess the situation to see if that is what the problem is they are located at the botom of the column. we do carry them the part number is 91-061 and the cost is 2.99 for a pair.

Had the same problem with mine before putting an auto trans in it. Sounds like your shifting linkage under the hood at the top of the steering column has decided to wear out.

You can have the bushing and linkage repaired which can be costly. Another option if you want to stay with the manual tranny is to convert it to a floor shifter. I just helped a friend do that very thing last week and it works great.

SHIFT LINKAGE IS MADE OF SIMPLE PARTS, COMBINATIONS OF LEVERS WITH BUSHINGS FOR FRICTION REDUCERS. WHEN THE BUSHINGS WEAR OUT THEY CAN CAUSE ENOUGH PLAY TO ALLOW THE LINKAGE TO BIND. CHECK THE BUSHINGS AT THE BASE OF THE COLUMN FIRST THEN MOVE TO THE ONES ON THE TRANS. OR, YOU CAN ALWAYS WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE TO CRAWL UNDERNEATH IT IN THE MIDDLE OF AND INTERSECTION TO GET INTO GEAR FIRST. TECH1 IS RIGHT AND IT'S A CHEAP FIX TOO.

Thanks, ordering the shift lever bushings, cheap maintenance and also adjusted the shift lever at the top of column at steering wheel and this took care of the problem. Going to put bushings in anyway just in case. Thanks for the advice.
