don't know if this is true, but this guy at an auto swap meet told me it was an option on these trucks. it mounts to the crossmembers, and the tire faces upwards and you can pull it back past the bumper and just unbolt and lift the tire off.
-does this sound right or is he giving me a line??

    !!!!

That thing came from a mid 80's Dodge and will reduce the value of your pre
'53 GM truck ~ please box it up carefully and mail it to me for proper disposal....... :D I'll save you the public humiliation of putting it on your nice old truck... :p

This slide out spare tire carrier is a real find , it was fitted from 1947 to 1952 when the sidemount came out to the collective relief of every farmer in America who'd laid down on a muddy road trying to wrestle the spare out from underneath the bed....

I'm _still_ looking for one of these as most were simply tossed out the very
1st. time the truck had a flat .

my truck still has the sliding piece under the truck but the rest of it is gone. I think someone didnt like it so they put one on the side because there is a plate welded over the holes on the side of the bed. I wish I could find the rest of the sliding under bed rack, but thats the last thing i need to worry about right now!

    Underbed Spare Tire Carriers

Good links ! the 1st. one is two veiws of the 1/2 & 3/4 ton slide out carrier .

The 2nd. view is two different carriers ~ 1st. is for the BIG wheels used on larger 'Bolts and the 2nd. one is the basic /2 & 3/4T. diagonal one that GM used well into the 70's so they're dead simple to find in most junkyards , only the hanging bolts and wierd locknuts are hard to find , later locknuts have a
' wing ' on them so you can snap a padlock on and prevent spare tire theft by Pikeys or Gypsies.....
