The steering on my 64 is kind of sloppy. It is the stock manual setup( as far as I know). I can turn the steering wheel about 2.5 inches before it grabs. Any one know how to adjust the steering box. My father said that it can be done but he can't remember how. thanks, Mike

2 1/2 " is a LOT ! I'm not sure adjusting the box will have any lasting effect.

BUT, for what ever it's worth. At the top side of the steering box is a nut sttting on a threaded shaft. The shaft has a slot cut into the top. Back off the nut and with a BFS ( big freakin screwdriver) tighten down the threaded shaft. Then holding the shaft with the screwdriver, tighten the bolt back up.

Check other components of the steering and suspension too. Worn tie rod ends, and idler arm will make steering feel sloppy as well. ( AND are hazardous ) Worn suspension components like ball joints and bushings will also make it feel like it wants to wander around that you may think is sloppy steering.

Check things out with the truck up on jack stands under the frame rails.

thanks, the tie rod ends and the rest of the front end are fairly new. I just want to get it a little better, until I have enough $ to get a power conversion kit

If the tie rods are new then check pitman arm and idler arm. Also if the ball joints are old (you can tell if the upper is still rivited) then replace them too. All those parts will run you around $100 at the local parts store.
