..........can cause major headaches. I thought I'd go ahead and prime the oil pump since the motor hadn't been started in awhile. I rented the tool from Autozone and attached to my drill and began what should have been a very simple task. To me suprise, oil began to pour from the engine! I must have lost a quart and I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on. I discovered that I had left the oil pressure sending unit off the back of the motor. No problem right? Wrong!! I'm using a set of 5" Haneline guages and the sending unit will not clear the back of the intake. There were adapters that came with it but they to will not clear. I might be able to modify one of the fittings by shortening it and adding a short hose on one end and the sending unit on the other. Anybody know how much pressure will build up and if the hose will work?

Not sure. However, my 235 puts out 30 plus lbs. at speed. The canister oil filter lines on my engine were shot. I cut the lines off the fittings and attached oil resistant fuel line to them and hose clamped them into place. A real farmer type fix as outlined by our very own farm mechanic, Nate. works fine with no problems. Don't see why you can't do something similiar on the pressure sending unit. Are the gauges mechanical (no sending unit, just an oil line to the gauge) or electrical (with sending unit)? sounds like some creative plumbing needs be done.

There can be two more oil pressure access points depending on the year of the engine. All the earlier engines had an 1/8" pipe plug above the timing cover on the drivers side and the later engines have a flat pad that just hasn't been drilled and tapped. Many of the engines had a plug directly above the oil filter. It never bothers me to use a carbide burr in a dremel tool to gain a little clearance since any overhang isn't pressing on the rear seal anyway.

Evan's right. The '58 235 in my truck has the pipe plug on the passenger side at the top of the head, just below the rocker cover about midway front to back.

    Is this a 6 banger or a V-8 engine ?.

intake manifold clearance issues sounds like it's a V-8 , just use a 1/4" NPT bit of pipe as a standoff or use an elbow , whatever you need to gain clearance....

It's a 327. I'm going to look at the plug above the oil filter or try ti find a shorter stud to use out back.

Plumbing dept. at Lowes. Get a nipple and a 90 degree street elbow in brass to fit the threads.

Planning on stopping by Lowes tonight on the way home. The guages came with nipples and elbows but they're too long.
