My speedo quit on me the other day at 251,679 km on a 79 K15 4x4. Just stoped - no warning. The cable looks fine. I believe it is the gear. I suspect there may be several gear available and was wondering on how to order a new one.

My truck is a 1979 GMC K1500 4x4 with a 4 speed manual transmission. I'm not sure of the rear end ratio, or do I need to know that at all.

    Any help would be appreciated.

As I understand it there will be two gears, the driving gear which is housed in transmission and the driven gear. The driven gear is easy...just undo the cable at the transmission and the gear is on the end. To get to the drive gear you usually must take the transmission apart. Hopefully it's your driven gear that is bad. just replace it with one that has same number of teeths. Good luck

I assume you checked and the cable was not turnnng at the dash. That's the first thing to check. Put the rear on jack stands with the instrument console off check and make sure cable is not spinning. If it is spinning the it's the speedometer.

Thanks for the information. It's the driven gear that's broken.
