Here is a trivial question for you. I have "fixed" my speedometer. Looking at the back of the speedometer, does the gear turn clockwise or counterclockwise in order to make the needle register speed. I haven't put it back in yet but with it out, if I spin it clockwise, the needle goes backwards. If I spin it counter clockwise it doesn't do anything. Has anyone worked through this phenomena?

    Memories

If I remember correctly, looking at the back of the housing, the pin spins counter-clockwise. The faster it turns, the more the motion helps "keep it up".

True story- when I rebuilt my guages, I tried this just to see if mine even worked before I went to the trouble of dinkin' with it. It spins the same way the needle move off of zero.

I say this without ever driving my truck over 20mph before taking it out of circulation... That'll change!

    By the way...

Great title for this thread, Gater! "Speedo troubles"! They can be a b#$%^&, but it depends on what pops up. Give me those big baggy floral print trunks anyday!;)

It's hard to stay focussed- (no pun intended) My new puppy is laying on the floor SNORING with her tongue sticking out of her mouth by @ 3/4 of an inch! TOO funny! She's a lab/shepard mix, so there's no excuse for this!:D

    Zig,
I thought you would like the title. By the way, if you have a lab mix you might as well get all your shoes and anything else that is loose and go ahead and run over them with a lawn mower. By the time she gets through the chewing stage, that is what everything will look like anyway:)
Thanks for the feedback. I will probably give it a spin with my drill in reverse just to make sure.

I put everything back together and installed it. The odometer is working fine, Of course, it works from a mechanical gear and that is different from the way the needle works. The needle is not moving at all. There is a magnet that turns with the cable and a "bell" (for lack of a better term) that covers the magnet. The needle is attached to a pin that is extends through the bell. I don't know how the spinning magnet inside the bell is suppose to make the needle move.
    Anybody got an idea?
Thanks for sharing your experiences on this one. If I can't figure it out soon I am just going to send it off to one of those specialty houses that rebuilds them. It is the principal of the thing though. I need to conquer this sucker.

    Where's the little mouse???????

When you dismantled the speedo did you find the little mouse that lives inside the 'bell' part? without him running round the bell the needle will not register anything. You will have to order a new one from Chevy but please dont make the common mistake and order the wrong mouse, those cast iron motors are nearly impossible to squeeze into your speedo, it can be done, but its not easy. Also when you order it make sure you get a brown mouse, the white ones are ok but the brown ones last longer and seem to be a better judge of how fast your going so the speedo is more accurate, another thing, the white ones have been known to just wedge the needle at 55 on long journeys and put their feet up for a rest, which is a bit scary when you come off the ramp of a freeway and your speedo still reads 55!!!!

The way it works is this : the spinning magnet draws the steel cup piece after it ~ there is no direct connection .

If the magnet spins freely , the needle should follow ~ if the needle is free to move , the magnet may have lost it's strength .

All I ever do is lubricate the input shaft bushing , beyond that I have the speedo guy do it .

I'm now struggling with the odometer of one of my old Mercedes Benzes , the pot metal drive gear is loose on the shaft , I'm going to try and stick it back into place with some green LockTite dribbled in from a toothpick...

Thanks, Brit! You are always good for a good story regardless of the subject matter.

    Nate,
I think I fugured it out. I will try tonight to correct it. I was looking at a bell that I have that is spare and noticed there is a stop that the bell hits to keep the needle from spinning all around. I reckon I have the piece that hits the stop on the wrong side fo the stop. I have gotten use to missing things like this since my eyes have gotten older.
I'll let you know how it goes. If that doesn't fix it I will get the part number for that brown mouse from Brit.

And the picture of your truck, brit, will have something to do with mice! It really sounds good to me though, and that is some advice that we should all keep in mind- just in case any of our speedos goes out.
(Come on everyone, smile and nodd your heads up and down and give a big "thumbs-up" to the East just for brit.)
