Currently after i let off the foot starter, the starter gear retracts but not enough and the starter is staying engaged on the flywheel. the problem is which the starter not the foot starter pedal linkage.is there a way to adjust the gear? i took the starter back off and you can see that the gear isn't retracting far the engine starting position.

I would take a part and clean the whole bit and check up the electric device on top , inside bearings and brushes , toohwheel ect.
Easy job if your handy and patient.

Make shure the spring is fully retracting the foot pedal linkage. The flat bar that makes contact with the starter button on the starter also pushes the gear into contact with the flywheel. If the linkage is not retracting all the way, this rod will not retract the gear either.

It is internal to the starter. As i said i took it off the truck and was cycling it and could see the gear not retracting very far. It needs adjusted or a part swapped because you can hear it hit at the end of the retraction. It is a just out of the box remanufactured starter. I was hoping to not have to just do blind exploratory surgery on the starter.

    Pay Attention !

To what Ol' Chebby said : the pedal linkage is what retracts the Bendix fully .

Fix that and you're home free .

I assume the Bendix slides easily on the armature's shaft....

It was retracting as far as it could. After some exploratory starter surgery i found two non-metallic washers between the bendix and armature. They are not on the exploded diagram in the shop manual, so i took them out. without those in there it let the bendix slide the fraction of an inch further back to clear the flywheel.
You guys are really mad at the foot pedal linkage. :) even after i said a couple times i disconnected the external linkage, you gents still had your pitch forks and stake burning. you fine fellows crack me up some time. honestly thanks for the help and i know there will be more needed in the future.

    Thrust Washers

They are quite important , don't toss them out just yet .

I don't trust rebuilders to do thungs right ~ the thrust washers are not thick enough th=o hold the Bendix out that far ~ this raises the question of wqhy it sticks out too far when it's at rest .

I wonder if maybe the wrong Bendix was used .

If you kept the old starter , you could match it up and see what I'm talking about .

I kept them but they are sorta thick. when i had the starters apart I put the bendixs next to each other and they were the same height. The old one didnt have those washers either and the shop manual only shows a snap ring. But to be honest you can trust the starter it arrived with as much as a rebuilt one from napa. Who knows what people have farm fixed thru the years. also with the bendix extended the measurements put the flywheel centered on the starting gear so works for now.
