starter wont stop

I just swapped a different 350 into my '71 and I go to crank it but when I turn the key off the starter keeps cranking.the truck dosent seem to whant to fire either.its gettin spark and plenty of fuel but it dosent even cough or sputter.any ideas?.please Help.Karl( :'(

The starter might need to be shimmed away from the flywheel.i have a truck that does the same but soem times it will fire and the starter is still stuck so it boggs the engine down.

If the shims dont work I would check the starter solenoid. There notorious for sticking when they've taken in to much heat. Sounds like your firing problem may be due to crossed wire or possibly the
distributer is stabed a tooth off.
 
starters will also stick if you have a low voltage getting to them, you also might want to put a charger on the battery to make sure it isn't low. If it is a small block v-8 you firing order should be 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

thanks guys i got it runnin,the distributor was 180 out and the stater needed shims.but know i got another problem.its no getting enough fuel,its got a clear body fliter and it used to be full all the time, now its only 1/2 full even when its running,and when i wind er up it gets to about 60 and then it starts starving for fuel.any thoughts on this.thanks.Karl

Did you use your the fuel pump from your old motor ? Or one that was on the motor you swapped in?

Check for the obvious kink in the fuel line between the pump and carb.

If the line looks clear, it has to be fuel pump related.

I used the fuel pump off the old motor, as it is fairly new.i think I found the problem though,I started it up popped the hood and there was fule squirting out of the fuel line close to the pump.there must be a pin hole down there.I dont think I noticed it before cause the metal expands when it gets hot.so heres the next qustion.could I just cut it off,behind the hole and run rubber the rest of the way?.or is that a bad idea?.Karl

I've ran some of mine like that, it will work but you have to be careful. The more rubber hose the more likely you are to rub a hole in it, and then you can have real problems.
