Old battery was dead, bought a new 6 volt, its charged, but truck wont start. Cranks over a few times, then it will turn over once about every 3 seconds. Didnt have this problem with the old battery. Any ideas? Thanks
Clean the dickens out of the cable ends both on the battery and starter/ground ends. Sometimes the ends are corroded internally which calls for new cables. If still sluggish take the main feed wire off the battery terminal (prevents damage to gauges/lights) on the starter so just the battery cable is on the terminal by itself and drop in a temporary 12v battery---it won't hurt the starter. If still sluggish pull starter and have rebuilt or rebuild it yourself.
If a foot stomp starter also check the copper bolt head inside the starter switch for corrosion or wear. Bolt can be rotated 180* to give a new contact area.
Another question, sorry guys new to this. In all 3 key positions, center, one left and one right the truck will attempt to turn over. This cant be right, right? Truck should only start will key in the right position. Someone help!
The stomp starter will make the engine TURN OVER with the key in ANY position, including in your pocket. The engine will actually start only with the key in the on position.
Thanks for the input. See pic, I noticed the voltage regulator says 12 volt and I have a 6volt battery in it. Could that make a difference?
What kind of Generator is installed in the truck? Also, if the lights work OK, check the brake/turn signal lamp and see what number it is. This can give you the information you need. Bill Brubaker.
Security Alert... .......or with a little 10 inch wire....the bulbs will start popping immediately, if it was supposed to be 6 volt...don't turn on your original radio...if you really like the old sounds of super wide frequency radio...if it is still around your neighborhood. rod
Some Clarity Please Was this rig running and starting O.K. with a 6 volt battery before? . That's an old regulator that's obviously been in there for a long time as in years .
I would say Yes. Start her up and check the running voltage. At fast idle it should be above 12v if you have a 12 volt generator.
After seeing this post, I pulled my 6 volt starter, cleaned and re installed. I also cleaned the ground and positive terminals. Night and day. Starting always sounded like a dead battery. Not anymore. Thanks Jeff
