looks like grease topped offf with 90w oild is the correct method of lubing the steering box.. per other forms and my restoring AD truck manual..

unfortunatly I already filled it with 90w oil.. so I am going to go suck it out and do the grease thing..

"The steering box is to be filled through the pipe plug opening on the top of the box with the top sidecover bolt above the adjustment screw removed. GREASE is to be pumped into the steering box until the grease comes out through the bolt hole. The bolt is to then be reinstalled and the steering box topped off with 80W-90 gear oil.
From experience if you rebuild the gear box and fill it with oil, even with new seals and everything in perfect condition it will leak. If you drain the oil and fill it as specified above the leaks stop, the internal mechanisms get the lube that they need and the box works as it should"

Mot, Review the recent discussion on steering lube

Mot, we had a pretty interesting discussion on this a few months back. There were some pretty good and differing opinions. I recently got a rebuilt box from our sponsor and filled it with 90 weight oil. I haven't had any leaking. I think thats what my 47' manual recommended:).

On my new 53' I filled it with 90w and it leaked it out all over my floor in 2-3 days:mad:. I did replace the seal with the part #'s provided by another member and refilled with STP and some 90w maybe 1/2 and 1/2. I don't have any leaking and its been several weeks:D.

Someone else likes to use grease but only the synthetic type. You may want to search and check those threads before you decide what's best for your application:cool:.

    Never, ever, ever

NEVER use grease in your steering box. It will prevent the recirculating balls from recirculating and lead to failure of the box in no time flat.

If you are worried about leaks, replace the seals. Oops, sorry, yes it's a PIA but there are no short cuts with this one.

90 weight gear oil is the only lube to be used in the box. I have heard that some STP can be used along with the gear oil if there is a small leak, but I have not tried it myself. Let's wait on Nate to offer his sage advice on this one.

Oil and ONLY oil MUST be used to lube the steering box else it'll wear out faster thatn a politition forgets his promises.....

You have been warned , the supply of good used boxes or N.O.S. worms & sectors is dwindling daily .

DON'T deliberately hurt your old truck :(
