About to install a Spotlight '51 3100 pickup. I dont have the drill jig yet, guess I've got to get one from the manufacturer Unity. Any suggestions before I start? I know to avoid the dome wire running up the A pillar. Any other suggestions would be appreciated Haasman New at this but having fun
We prefer the "Guide" GM spotlights rather than the "Unity" lights as the Guides also have a provision to mount a rearview mirror on the back of the light head which doubles as an additional adjustible rear view mirror. The installation is the same on both style lights. Remove the inner & outer pillar mounting brackets from the light shaft & screw them to the windshield pillar.... That is your template. Start with a 1/4" drill bit & work your way up to the 1/2" bit . Scariest part is drilling that big ass 1/2" hole through your windshield pillar. Not only is the dome lamp wire run through the pillar... the gas gauge wire is also run through it. I have found that you can run a piece of split wire loom over the 2 wires & slide it up in the inner pillar to protect the wires from the drill bit. The main rule to remember when lining up your drill position is to keep the drill horizontal.... If your bore is not horizontal to the ground.... You get light a beam on the ground or up into the sky but not where you need it in front of you.
Thanks for that info. What is generally considered the right height from the lowest part of windshield? Where on the "A" pillar? Haasman
Spotlight Location Pictures 2 & 3 clearly show the location , the installation kits , they cost under $10 , will have a nifty paper template so you don't make a goof .
I did mine from retired police spots. Just mount the outer collar to the windshield post, then drill through. Keep it level and eyeball it so that you don't drill into the door frame instead of the inside pillar. Take your time and go slowly.
Any opinions or suggestions on location (up or down on the A pillar). Looking at the pcitures is helpful, but wondering if there are any obvious pitfalls such as hitting the steering wheel etc. Thanks for the help on this one. Haasman
