ok, sorry if you didn't want these up here for whatever reason, nate, but i think this truck is _so_ super slick!

so are those split rims you're running there? how wide are the tires, cuz i heard the wider you get from original, the harder it is to turn when stopped. and do i see a trim ring around the outside of the rim, there? where do you get those? god, i LOVE those red steelies! i'm definately doing that with mine, and i'll bet that white paint keeps your truck nice and cool in our 115 degree weather, eh? i'm inspired! looks like you need a custom painted, hand lettered logo on the door, though (or some pinstriping, whatever your needs may be). i could do that for you, ya know, if you were fine-tune my beast ;) (may take you an hour, ha!!) :D

    split rims

anybody have any input on pros and cons of split rims, maybe price range of getting the centers welded, or buying new rims? i'm not rich, but i'm still not sure about the whole safety issue of running the split rims. what i may do is keep two sets of wheels. any ideas??

ALWAYS HAVE YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW AIR THEM UP!!!!:D Any time you gotta cage up a tire to look at it makes me think maybe an update would be the better way to go... Nates right. Regular tire shops are like, split rims? No, we don't do them. BUT big truck shops can handle them- EVEN here in Pittsburg, Kansas.;) The only thing is, I'm lazy and would rather go down the block to have my tires worked on instead of running out to the truck shack on the highway. (They're also closed on the weekends- Wally's isn't.) I WILL have a set of split rims WITH aired tires for those in need next summer. I bought a set of those "F"-brand 8 lug wheels to put on my ride so I could go the radial route. When I get ready to rid myself of the 3/4 stuff, I guess I'll be able to help a few of you'ins out. I'll also have practically brand new 3/4 shoes and cylinders for anyone redoing brakes. One other thing. Every time I look at my split rims I can't help but laugh when I see the trim ring made of wheel weights! Were these things THAT out of balance as a general rule? My truck probably weighs 5 pounds more than it otherwise would because of the weights! Happy T-day everyone!

Uh oh ! I wonder how SWMBO will like being all over the Internet....

Those are stock 16" one piece Chevy rims I keep telling you guys about , my truck came with 15" white spokers from the 1970's by the look of them  they had brandy new tires on them and stuck out past the fenders about 3" ,
I was unable to sell of even GIVE them away so I put them on my kerb on trash day and the nice mexican fallows down my block who routinely take all my scrap metal were most happy to receive 4 new 15" G78 tires

I went to my favorite secret desert junkyard where they have a long row of old tires & wheels , it must be 200' long and 4' tall . chock full of black widow spiders and scorpions , Hanta v*rus mouse holes and etc. none of that bothers me so I dug untill I had a nice set of 7 wheels , dismounted the rock hard 1962 Bia-Ply tires and had them powder coated , red of course , hadda be red ya know

One of the rims was buried in the sand for many years , it is visably pitted even through the powder coating but so what ? .

IIRC , the tires are LT215/85R16 , I know they're made by Dayton and I bought them from Diamondback Classics ~ they're skinny and tall just like the original 650.16 tires were so the handling is good , NO steering effort unless sitting stock still (that will kill your steering box anyway so don't EVER do it) plus the large outer diameter allows for relaxed engine RPM's when I'm zipping across the desert .

the trim rings I have picked up here and there , every one was dull and matt finish plus dents when I got 'em , I sit under my tangerine tree with the radio on and a cold beverage by my side and the pooches at my feet , hand polish each one to a mirror shine , Stainless steel , even old nasty white corroded , can be easily polished back up to a like new shine . I don't worry about the dents and gouges as this is after all , my work truck . I keep the extra trim rings hanging on the tree branches and low a couple have been up there so long I'll need to cut the branch off to ever remove it for use..... :p

These are re-popped cheaply but I always buy them in broken sets whenever I see them @ auto Jumbles or wherever as NO ONE else ever wants them and I can trade away for other good used parts once they're shiny .

There's three different styles I know of , I like the 40's vintage ones with the four thin lines stamped in and only recently got a full set of 5 , one of these days I'll polish them up and install ~ maybe after I get the sidemount spare on .

I'd love some nice stock typ red pinstripes on my cab plus having the shop name hand painted would be very cool too ~ I know there's places that still do this here but I know not where .

Glad you like it , for a 58 year old POC shop truck it looks O.K. donch'a think ;)

We clean and shine all of our stainless trim on a bench grinder with a buffing pad on it using jeweler's rogue. We would start out with black rogue to get stratches out and acheive a low lustre look, then follow with red rogue to get it looking nice and shiny.:D If anyone tries it, one caution: Do not leave the piece in one position for too long or you will burn the stainless, then it looks like crap. My Tech Tip for today.:D

SWMBO... She's With Me so Back Off? Simply Wipe My Butt Off? Shoulda' Waited 'till Monday, But Ohwell? Stay Way from My Babe, Okay? Ahh, one day- or night- I will be jolted by what everyone else on this site probably knew for years... Just what SWMBO really means. I'm sorry Nate, but I've not been able to crack this one. You MUST have been in the military the way you throw acronyms around! It kinda' reminds me of reading a set of orders.:) Now you're going to have to come out here! you can help us move my cab, pick up your long block AND let me letter your truck. I'm pretty good with a sable brush (won some art comps) OR a rattle can!:D By the way- if that's your POC (I got that one) work truck, what the ---- does your pleasure truck look like?!

    Hey Zig,

SWMBO means "She Who Must Be Obeyed". I too am often baffled by the Grand Wizard's acronyms. I found some of your attempts to figure out SWMBO very funny. "Simply Wipe My Butt Off"...just tooooo funny.:D

    Happy Thanksgiving !

    Hi guys ! :)

I'm in Natick , Ma. , a suburb of Boston , I flew in to spend myhap my last Thanksgiving with Moms as she's not well :( .

I've been up for 28 hours and counting, the Jet Lag won't let me sleep just yet

    I hit the ground here @ 05:20 and by 06:30 I'd found a '64 Mustang , a '68 VW Beetle and some old 70's vintage Mercedes so I don't want to hear any B.S. about " no old undiscovered cars left " :D .

It is raining (duh , it's New England) and hovering @ 40 degrees .

I hope I get some turkey before I pass out

Be well , don't fight over the football game .

Oh yes ~ I don't have/need a 2nd. truck for ' pleasure ' ~ why the heck do you think I keep this old piece of junk around ? :D I climb in and grasp the big old ivory steering wheel , fire it u and let out the clutch and the 235 takes me back to 1967 or so...........

They -both- leak pretty good in the rain :D

My U-joint is groaning pretty badly , I don;t want to wind up like Albion who either exploded his U-joint or siezed his Oakie Bushing last week , I'm still waiting for him to hammer the ball housing back so we can find out just what happened .

Looking at those pix again (it was about 120° that day) I guess it does look pretty good for a $3,500.00 truck .

Nate, She's a great looker! Oh yeah, the truck looks good, too.
I'm a newbie and want to say thanks for all the great advice you give. This is my first resto and I learn something every time I come to this site. Also really enjoy the byplay-- fun is what this is all about.
    Thanks again.

Ditto what Kevin said. "Missoula" as in Montana? Beautiful state, but way too cold for me! 71 degrees tonight here in Tomball, Tx (just NW of Houston) but we're supposed to have a "blue norther" pass through tomorrow and drop the temp into the mid 30's by tomorrow night. BRRRR! It'll be back in the 80's by Monday though. Let us know what you are working on and/or driving.

    Welcome

Yep, that goes fer me too. Welcome! I'm kinda new to the site and also find the info very useful, but, play? We all take our old codger rides very very seriously and hope we remember were we left them last. I'm in Gallatin Tex. 7 miles east of the Rusk Tex metroplex... got to make our 368 population sound as big as possible. We did have a traffic jam yesterday........ we had two cars at our one stop sign at the same time.

Hey Kens50, I got my hands on a 48, 50 and 2-51s and a half of something else between 47 and 53. Got them all for body work on 4 fenders and $500. Now if I can get through with the one i've been waiting on from the paint shop for 2 MONTHS...GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

    America The BEAUTIFUL

Yep , Montanna is extremely beautiful , to fully understand why it's called " Big Sky " country , you need to go there and walk outside , at night , in the country ~ there are -SO- many stars you'll think you have to duck your head or get bonked ;) .

It is cold there but that's cool too as it reduces SMOG .

Don't just thank me these guys have taught me far more than I can ever teach you .

I am very lucky that SWMBO allows me into her life , she certainly doesn't need a brokenb down old country mechanic cluttering up her life :p
