My 55.1 came to me just before it went to the crusher without any paperwork, naturally. I have the paperwork (clear title) and the ID plate from the '54 parts truck that I can swap onto mine. However, I would really like to title it as a '55 for obvious reasons. I have heard about title bonding, but don't know much about it. Anybody have experience with this?

Andy, I had to go thru that here in Montana-- $100 and a 3 year wait for a clear title-- Don't have any idea what you might run into In New Yawk.

Use New Hampshire Title Service .

Pay the extra for license plates and current registration then wait a year before transferring it to your New York state , old vehicles DO NOT get a title so don't surrender the N.H. one ! .

You should be able to just walk into your local RMV with the VIN and get current registration .

No , I Lien Sale everything that's sans title ~ takes longer & more $ but I never have a problem . You cam ask your local OPG who they use to Mechanic's Liens on abandoned vehicles .

You should have begun this way back when Andy ~ what if the VIN turns up a lien ? .

If you go to a magazine rack , look in Hemmings Motor news , there will be several Title Service places , call them all and use the one that will provide you with a title and plates & registration .

Be VERY wary of anyplace in New Jersey , home of scam titles .

Figured if it came back bad, I'd just use the plate and paper from the parts truck. Local DMV will not do a search for me on the VIN. Prima donna's. Don't want to help me out on this. Local DMV says to just register it and THEN the DMV at the state capitol will do the search and get back to me on it. Kinda leaves me with a big question mark. That's why I want to bond it. Also, in order to register it, it must be insured. State won't give a title on a pre-1972 vehicle. So in order to find out if the title is clear, I have to insure it, register it and wait??? There has to be a better way.

BTW, I've been poring over Hemmings for several months and have not been able to find any title service companies in there. I must be looking in the wrong spot. I'll try again.

Just spoke to DMV again. I can do a title search on the truck, which I will do in the future. Right now, I'm going to take my clear title and VIN plate from the '54 parts truck and register it as a '54. I'lll deal with the hassles of clearing the '55 title later on. This way, I KNOW the truck is safe for sure.

Unless you have the truck registered in in another state it looks like you don't get a title in New York.

I snooped the NY DMV pages and found this http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/proove.htm

It sounds like they have a severe case of "it's too old we don't want to be bothered with it".
Nice 54 ya got there by the way.

Yeah, I know. Looks like I'm registering it as a '54 until I can clear up the '55 VIN number. Could take months and months.
