I just completed installing my donor stock torque tube in my 51 Chevy 1/2 ton. I ran a string line down the centerline of the frame.
I notice that the u joint end of the torque tube is not directly in line to the centerline of the frame, looking down from the top. It's about 3/8" off the centerline of the frame, based on my string line.
    Here's what I know...
the string line is exactly in the center of the frame (measured in several places)
The rear axle is set squarely on the springs and square on the frame.
I know I can push the torque tube into line when I install the motor/transmission, and the u joint will help, but am I looking at other problems to develop due to side loading on the splined connection later on.
I can't believe the torque tube would not be not square with the rear axle? I put a straight edge on the torque tube and it is straight.
Am I looking too much into this or is this common?
    thanks

I just wonder if your transmission sits exactly in the center of your frame?

    centre of tube

You mention the u joint end but what about the diff und of the tube? does that sit dead centre or is that out? also try checking your axle is in square, measure from the centre of each hub to various places on the chassis to check its true.
