Recently I bought a 450 LB scissors lift transmission jack at Harbor Freight Tools. Item 39178-1VGA. They go on sale often for $50. It has a V shaped cradle and I've found this tool very handy with chores besides jockeying trannys. It's like a third hand. The scissors movement is easy to adjust, all casters swivel, and the cradle tilts too.

It worked very well propping a door upright as I attached the hinges to the cab of my truck. Today I installed a new starter and what a godsend this jack was. I set the starter in the cradle and it nested nicely by itself. I was able to raise the starter enough to connect the battery and ignition wires comfortably. I can imagine how handy this tool will be when I tackle exhaust work, propping pipes exactly where I want them.
