Truck wont start need help

Hello to all

I have a 64 c10 with the 230 6 cyl. Up until 2 weeks ago I was driving it 2-3 time a week. One day I was driving and the next day it wouldn't start. It cranks and if I feather the gas it will cough, but it wont catch. I thought I flooded it...I could smell the gas and when it coughed some white smoke came out of the exhaust. I changed out the plugs today and checked for spark. There is a spark on the #1 plug when I crank it. Still no luck starting. I know that it could be a lot of things but I would like someplace to start.

If you have fire and you have gas getting to the Carb. and compression it should start. If it doesn't there could be other problems like worn out timing gears that would cause the timing chain to jump time or a plugged exhaust. You might want to do a compression check and see whats going on from there? How was it running the last time you drove it? Did it back fire or do anything unusual?.....Big Tim

It has been running rough, a few backfires through the carb and it has been running hot. Not overheating but getting pretty warm at highway speeds.

Ya know that sounds like a timing problem. You probably have a timing chain and gears that's gone bad. I would pull the valve cover and Dist. cap. Then roll the engine over and make sure your valves are opening and closing and the rotor is turning. Then roll the engine over until it's top dead center on #1 then check to see if your rotor is pointing to the #1 wire on the cap then check to see if both valves are closed on the # 1 cylinder. If you don't have all these things then you probably need to change your timing chain and gears. I hope this helps....Big Tim

Something easier to check is the points. It is possible for the rubbing block to wear sufficiently to close the gap which throws off the timing enough to prevent ignition.

Also, the 230 6 uses a timing gear set (no chain). The factory gears come with fiber or nylon teeth on the cam gear, which can fracture and fail. Using the advice in the thread above will help you determine if you have breakage of this type.
