I,m putting a 283 back in my 58 truck with a 350 trans, and wanted to get some feed back as to how some of you have mounted the tubular V8 crossmember. Did you bolt the side collars to the frame or weld them in? Did you weld the collars to the crossmember or bolt it together? After getting the engine squared up and level, how did you keep the the crossmember in place to either bolt or weld it in place? Thanks for the help and any further info would always be appreciated. Les
If I would have gone ahead and gone this route, I would have followed CP's directions. If I had any questions, I would have asked them, since it's their baby. (and they go out of their way to help...) Buy it, install it, be happy! ZOOM ZOOM!
Tubular Crossmember Les ; This is usually a well designed part made to utilize your current frame's holes and carry a GM 350 tranny . The guys I've known use them , liked them quite a bit .
We usually make our own frame mount stands but last winter used a tubular universal setup in a 56 GMC that the owner had us put a 302 Ford engine into (no kidding). There were several things I liked; it was easy, quick, and most of all by having a tube from frame rail to frame rail it takes the twist away from both the rails and engine block. We welded ours simply because it's faster and easier when your equipped to do so. If I had to lay on my back under one with the weld bee bees burning holes in my shirt I'd seriously consider drilling.
